Laughter to be short-lived
Enjoy your mockery while you can, cher public.
The New York Times has decided they are going to start charging for content “in early 2011.” So, in a year or so, you won’t have Tony Tommasini to kick around any more. Or, to be perfectly accurate, you’ll be able to kick him around, but you’ll have to pay to find out what you’re kicking him for. [NYT]
Of course, the instigator of this type on nonsense was Rupert Murdoch and his darling son James, Ok the FT did it first, but Murdoch rags are all over the planet, even our beloved La C must get a little sweetener in a brown envelope each month for her contributions to his empire. Murdoch is setting the way forward, sadly the NYTimes feels it must follow suit.
I will of course be left with no other alternative than to just shut up and pay to read the things that I want to read. Is this the progress of the internet that we were promised?
I’m wrong. That wasn’t the year I went. When I went, Ms Racette was the hostess and the set was Billy Budd.
I didn’t pay for it back then and I won’t pay for it now. All Times columnists were available for free the very next day on other sites.
As for Tommasini’s reviews, most of it will be quoted on Opera-L and other blogs so who cares.
