To while away the tedious time of waiting for the next season of Metropolitan Opera HD transmissions, here’s a montage recalling the first two decades (1977-1998) of “Live from the Met” and “Metropolitan Opera Presents” telecasts:
This YouTube video originated on the MetManiac site back in 1998.
Wonderful stuff!
iltenore: I think Scotto’s partner in that Don Carlo was Moldaveanu.
Von Stade was Hansel to Blegen’s Gretel; Rosalinde Elias was the Witch, I think? I used to have that one on VHS.
And I recognize Roberta Alexander as Antonia and James Morris yet again, as Dr. Miracle, from the late 80s or early 90s. I remember that she sang it beautifully!
Mady-
Stratus’ tenor in BRIDE was Nicolai Gedda. The Bass was the extrodinarily tall Talvela. The first time I saw the broadcast, I thought he was on platform shoes, like the giants in RHEINGOLD.

Thanks for the info. Funny you should mention Talvela. As I type this I am listening to him singing King Marke with Nilsson and Widgassen. Thanks for taking the time to respond.
After all the sad deaths of opera singers in the last month, it may or not be ironic that Talvela died dancing at his daughter’s wedding in Finland. At least one guy died while happy.
One more posting and I’ll get out of the way. It would be interesting to have a clip of William Lewis as Malatestino in Francesca di Rimini; not sure of the musicality, but the guy’s acting of one of the great nasties is still in my memory.
ljc–I love Lewis in that Francesca, and it’s also the finest hour of the late career of Macneil. Domingo, Scotto, and Isola Jones all superb as actors and damn good singing.
The orchestra’s great. It’s always better than the singers anyway.
The smartest thing about the above comment is that the writer did not reveal his/her name.
