My dear… Anja S. is one of the most beautiful singing-actresses i’ve been introduced to by you…I thank you for bringing her into my life as you did Gwyneth. Excellent films of her performances.
I love this woman! She is such a phenomenon, and her ability to sing just about any repertoire is outstanding. She truly is an artist, and her Salome, Senta, Isolde, Brünnhilde, and Kostelnicka are all masterpieces of the stage. I am glad she is still singing. Her Kostelnicka last night truly was a powerful and epic interpretation of the part.
Help me out here:
I’m considering going out for Silja over President’s day weekend, but I also could go out to see Deborah Voight in Helene at the end of March. The March trip is more convenient, but the February trip has the better opera selections: I’d also try for BOCCANEGRA (I’ll see anything with Furlanetto).
What should I do? Missing a few days of school, but seeing Anja Silja in an opera I love and Kevin Kline in LEAR, or go over Spring Break and See Voight in an opera I’ve never heard and catch Donna Del Largo at the NYCO, as well as Christopher Plummer in INHERIT THE WIND?
I have litterally no idea what I should do. HELP!
P.S. Who is that gentleman sharing the narration duties with Dear Margaret? He’s dull as dishwater.
P.P.S Licitra kicks as as Turiddu. Why didn’t he just sing both roles from day one?
Baritenor – not sure I can help you out with your dilemma, but I can say that I intend to hear the Strauss this spring, hopefully with Trittico as well. If you do see the Boccanegra, I’d love to hear all about it. Who’s doing the Rossini at NYCO?
Barry Banks, Alexandrina Pendatchanska and Laura Vlasak Nolen, whom I’ve never heard of.
Isn’t that the Divine Jon as Siegmund in these dishy selections?
Baritenor — Helene will be around, and Debbie will be back. Even Silja can’t last FOREVER. In a role like Kostelnicka, she’s simply not to be missed. Grab it.
Mattila is caviar too, and I agree about Furlanetto. L’Arlesiana should be at least fun.
Hans: It’s Jess Thomas.
Hans-
I KNOW! But my schedule benifits from not going. After I posted that desperete message, I was basically informed that the February trip isn’t going to happen. I’m bummed, but the good news is is that I’ll be in Philie for a few days in early march and be able to squeeze in a Boccanegra. Plus, there’s always Sirius, and Mattila is bringing the production to LA in September. So all I’m really missing is seeing (rather than hearing) Silja in action, and I own her performance of the role on both DVD and CD, so….
Sigh, ah, who am I kidding. I’m going to go drown myself in cheap vodka.
Does anyone know if Silja’s Brunnhilde is available on CD anywhere?
When I was planning my trip to NYC, I was determined to catch the Mattila/Silja Jenufa. I was also going to catch the Onegin and Puritani. But then, Onegin sold out and I heard Kunde on the broadcast and heard bad things Futral, so the only thing worth seeing for the week I was planning was Jenufa. I’m now changing my plans to go when I can catch Debbie’s Helen and the Heppner/Urmana Chenier at the Met, and the Pendachanska/Banks La donna del lago at NYCO (and perhaps squeeze in Travaita at the met while I’m at it).
I think this will be a nice group of operas to see but I’m so sorry to be missing Jenufa. I knew that Silja’s Kostelnicka would be devastating and now I’m missing it. Oh, to be a high-powered executive and be able to fly into NYC just for one performance of Jenufa…
