A favorite mezzo performance from Elvira, back from the dead

Oralia Dominguez: deranged, demented, an absolute triumph.

I can’t believe how young she was, given the development of her voice in all registers.

And I wish that there were recordings of the risqué Mexican songs she regaled colleagues with at Glyndebourne!

Ronnie Bannerjee agrees with Elvira’s praise…

This might be stylistically dubious – I’m not an early music expert – but by the heavens, what singing. Like her granitic, stage-dominating Amneris, Oralia Dominguez, mezzo extraordinaire, leaves a remarkable account of the role of Judith, as is evident from this brief excerpt. Her voice, like the muted roar of an angry ocean, is deep, uniform, and tonally like an onyx or the texture of black velvet. Perfect legato, too.
