A favorite mezzo performance from Beth Taylor

Singing truly becomes a living thing in Jennifer Larmore‘s remarkable voice and personality.

I have to say that amongst many other favourites, Jennifer Larmore’s recording of Giulio Cesare (with René Jacobs, Concerto Köln/Harmonia Mundi 1991) is and always will be one of my utmost favourite opera recordings and inspirations to become a performer. I could almost swear it had a chemical effect on me in demonstrating possibilities with range, colour and dramatic impulse — all in one role! Singing truly becomes a living thing in her remarkable voice and personality. Her interpretation of the title role has sinewy, biting precision in recitatives, glorious legato, and triumphant coloratura that blows my mind every time! The musicality is rich, consistent and full of organic development in character.

Sanford is also a Jennifer Larmore fan…

One of my favorite mezzos is Jennifer Larmore. There’s just something so lovely about her plummy tone. And my favorite of all of her recordings is the Donald Runnicles-led I Capuleti opposite a gorgeous Hei Kyung Hong. They are perfectly matched.
