Next season I’m excited for Aigul Akhmetshina as Dalila
The mezzo international anthem is so oversung that we forget how hard it is to sing.

So few singers have the seductive timbre, breath control, and low notes for this role. I feel like Akmetshina might have all the qualities for a truly amazing Dalila.

Unfortunately I am no longer looking forward to Fanciulla in quite the same way, as I always thought of it as a sort of a capstone to Sondra’s remarkable career – from Elisabetta Prima to Minnie the saloon keeper…. Since that is not to be, I will travel for Aigul’s Dalila. In addition to sumptuous vocals, I’m hoping for a little Hedy Lamarr / De Mille camp.
