In the example above, Maestro Kempe not only inspires those both ethereal and vibrant Vienna strings to really shimmer like sunlight on waves, but in doing so points toward the transcendent origin of the knight. And he doesn’t rush that climax. It builds slowly into a divine majesty that takes the breath away and many times has brought me to my knees. As Evelyn Underhill said in her book Mysticism, one attains a “glimpse of the Everlasting Hills.”
Rudolf Kempe was a great opera conductor
I am once again going to laud the classic Rudolf Kempe commercial recording of Lohengrin (which I have lauded overall) for its conducting.
