A favorite art song performance from Leyla Gender-Bender

While I like both Erna Berger and Maria Stader’s versions, Erna Berger brings more drama to the rendition.

Her slightly acidic, weirdly childlike tone adds a degree of fairy-tale malevolence to the rendition, giving the surreal an undercurrent of the sinister. The final dramatic line “….or does it foretell death?” is a masterclass in M.R. Jamesian suspense, reminding us that Germany in 1955 had an intimate knowledge of apparently innocuous things suddenly possessed by immeasurable evil.
