A favorite art song performance from Timothy Gray

Wolfgang Holzmair‘s performance was amazing in its personal and intimate approach.

My favorite art song performance is Wolfgang Holzmair’s February 2000 Chicago concert, Whither Must I Wander, with songs from Schubert, Mahler, Vaughan Williams, Wolf, and Krenek communicated with the supple intelligent force of his deceptively light baritone. This was my first hearing of most songs, and in person it was as if we were witnesses to a wanderer’s actual inner journey instead of a crowd of Sunday-afternoon patrons being performed to. His performance was amazing in its personal and intimate approach. This studio recording presents the last selection from the Krenek segment, “Heimkehr,” in which each ending presents a new beginning.
