PB no longer exclusively stands for “Parterre Box” – starting today, it also stands for “prop betting.”
Parterre Box today announced that it has secured an exclusive partnership with Kalshi Inc., the first CTC-regulated exchange dedicated to trading on the outcome of future events, to allow opera fans to capitalize on their opinions and trade within the international operatic ecosystem.
Backed by Kalshi’s market-leading technology, the partnership will allow operagoers worldwide to place bets on a broad range of operatic asset categories, including interpolated and optional high notes; which performance edition of a score will be used; cancellations of star tenors; even future Met Opera seasons (and credit ratings). This move paves the way for increased financial opportunities for opera fans and a renewal of the lively exchange between artists and audiences that characterizes opera as a whole.
Commenting on the partnership, Kalshi COO Luana Lopes Lara says, “We are excited to work with Parterre Box on an initiative that stands to transform the performing arts industry. For 30 years, Parterre has epitomized the discourse inside and around the Metropolitan Opera men’s room, asking important questions such as: ‘Did they omit Marcellina’s aria?’ and ‘Who let Renée Fleming wear that?’ Now, opera fans will be able to earn money for their answers.”
Harry Rose, Managing Editor at Parterre Box, adds, “In the wake of Chalamet-gate, we are asking our readers to bet on us, to show that they still care. This is a bold step towards expanding access to the life-giving power of the performing arts.”
This partnership was piloted during the opening of the Metropolitan Opera’s new production of Tristan und Isolde. Users reported placing bets on such items as cuts made to the Act II love duet, number of fortissimo high notes sung by Lise Davidsen, individual Act run times, and how often the set “gave vagina.”
Jeffrey Lowenberg, a longtime Parterre Box reader and participant in the pilot program, said, “I placed a $60 bet that Michael Spyres would trade places with his Tristan double more than three times during the second Act and received a 20% return on my investment – I’ll never worry about wasting my money on a performance again!”
“The possibilities of this new initiative are endless,” said Ukrainian soprano Elona Theranovka, who will make her Met debut during the 2027-28 season in Maxim Kolomiiets’s The Mothers of Kherson. “I’ve always struggled with feeling objectified as a performer – but feeling commodified is such a thrill!”
The Parterre Box/Kalshi collaboration began in the third quarter of 2025 when Lopes, a former ballerina, noticed a distinct lack of speculative earning opportunities available to gay men ages 60-85 residing within the northeast corridor of the United States and their single, white female friends. Drawing on Parterre Box’s singular demographic, Kalshi hopes to drive impact across the performing arts space with an emphasis on people who knew who Rosa Ponselle was.
Parterre Box encourages cher public to start betting early and often, emphasizing that no operatic probability is off the table. And it encourages readers to offer their own categories in the comments section.
