Spyres, currently the Metropolitan Opera’s Tristan, sang his very first Nemorino in Barcelona last fall after having taken on both Siegmund and Walther at Bayreuth over the summer. “There was no trace of ‘Bayreuth bark’ in his healthy lyrical approach to Tristan,” said Christopher Corwin of Spyres’s Teutonic turn earlier this month, “and even the most challenging pages sounded remarkably bel canto.

Spyres will reprise his Nemorino in Vienna later this spring, but not before he makes another, equally unexpected role debut next month: Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music at Ozarks Lyric Opera where he is Artistic Director. The Emperor in Barrie Kosky’s Die Frau ohne Schatten in Aix follows in July.
