Swedish mezzo soprano Ann Hallenberg returns to the US this month for a four-city tour with The English Concert. She will perform one of her signature parts: Dejanira in Handel’s secular oratorio Hercules opening 8 March in Berkeley and continuing to Hanover, NH and Omaha before concluding with a concert on the Ides of March at Carnegie Hall. Parterre Box previews her upcoming performance with Hallenberg in some very unique Baroque repertoire.
Celebrated for her deep dives into rare 18th century repertoire, Hallenberg took on a new baroque role last fall: Stratonica in Alessandro Scarlatti’s Mitridate Eupatore, and collaborated with Concert Copenhagen on a program called “Freezing Italians” which focused on arias composed by itinerant Italians for Northern European courts. Vocal music was included by Giuseppe Sarti, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Francesco Uttini, and Fortunato Chellini. The latter (1690-1757) composed “Jesu, lär oss här lefva” for Alessandro Severo which Hallenberg sings for today’s Grand Tier Grab Bag.
