“Soprano Aleksandra Kurzak will sing the role of Cio-Cio-San in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, replacing Sonya Yoncheva, who has withdrawn from the run due to family reasons,” says the Met press office.

These performances will come right after Kurzak’s role debut as Turandot in Miami next month. Ailyn Pérez, who herself took over for an announced Elena Stikhina, handles the other Butterfly performances.

Kurzak’s Butterfly worked cher public into a lather in 2024, with Kevin Ng saying, “Vocally, it’s a hugely risky performance and there were moments in the second Act that I worried that she’d never make it through the evening, but the emotional payoff is immense.”

Yoncheva’s next scheduled performances in New York will be as Cherubini’s Medea in October.
