The best thing I saw in 2025 was Der Freischütz

A staged Freischütz is rare enough in itself to be the highlight of any opera season, but it was in Christoph Marthaler‘s Antwerp production that I connected with the characters and felt the story for the first time.

Led by the exceptional 75-year-old Rosemary Hardy as Ännchen, the fantastic cast happily followed Marthaler’s concept, and together with the superb orchestra (under the direction of the recently appointed chief conductor of the Flemish Opera, Stephan Zilias), they made this a performance to remember. A great evening!
