I’m still thinking about George Tabori’s Pagliacci

I love Tabori—his staging of Bluebeard’s Castle and Erwartung are among my five favorite opera performances of all time.

Most of the plays I saw in high school were modern and daring (with Vondel in particular, you could apparently go in any direction.), but operas at that time (in the 70s and 80s) were mostly very stale. Not this one! I love Tabori—his staging of Bluebeard’s Castle and Erwartung are among my five favorite opera performances of all time. I am very glad that this Pagliacci has been preserved. A genius.
