Nothing makes me feel better than Die ägyptische Helena

Die ägyptische Helena isn’t even an opera I love so much as a whole.

Strauss detractors often accuse him of note-spinning, and the score has its longueurs. But the lushness of the orchestration, constantly surprising harmonic modulations, and the sheer radiance of the vocal lines feel like such an indulgence.
