On September 28, Oper Köln mounted a new production of Puccini’s Manon Lescaut with Carolina López Moreno in the title role. The young Bolivian soprano has recently made headlines in London replacing absent star American sopranos.

In late 2024, Nadine Sierra withdrew from concert performances of Puccini’s La rondine with the London Symphony Orchestra and whose conductor Antonio Pappano tapped Moreno to be his Magda. Today’s “Grand Tier Grab Bag” features a snippet from their performance.

In August Moreno, Pappano and the LSO collaborated again in a BBC Proms performance of Suor Angelica.

Earlier this year when Lisette Oropesa withdrew from her first performances of Marguerite in Gounod’s Faust, London’s Royal Opera turned to Moreno to take her place.

After Manon in Germany, Moreno continues with Puccini performing Mimì in both Florence and Rome, followed by Violetta in Tokyo. Verdi arrives later next year with Alice Ford in Barcelona, then Amelia in Simon Boccanegra for her return to the Maggio Musicale.
