While I have reservations about the chosen cast, I look forward to experiencing some of the excitement that this opera generates when done well. I am not ashamed to say that I adore this verismo gem. Subtle it is not, but thrilling it can most definitely be. I have selected as an example the kind of performance (Met 5/2/1966) this opera needs in order to succeed — and now rarely gets.
