Of her Aïda, Aurelio Aureli observed that “[though] fully capable of unfurling her voice over Verdi’s massive ensemble climaxes, Maslova was more often inclined to dispatch her role’s sweeping melodies with a compact, slender and slightly cool timbre that nevertheless retained both carrying power and center of pitch.”
Surely the same can be said for her Turandot, which shows off pinpoint straight tone singing, trenchant chest notes, banging phrasing, and punchy text delivery. Also notable are the wonky tempi of Zubin Mehta who will return to this title in Munich next summer.
