This summer I’m reading Dom Carlos

A bleak and somber version of the familiar story by Saint-Réal, mixing facts with fiction, making it even more tragical than the Verdi opera.

Dom Carlos, by César Vichard de Saint-Réal

One of the first nouvelles historiques, first published in 1672, its main goal was to uncover the secret of the hearts. It is short, but not easily forgotten. There is an excellent edition of it by Laurence Plazenet for Le Livre de Poche.
