A favorite Mozart performance from Peter Russell
For many opera lovers of the Baby Boomer generation, German bass Kurt Moll (1938-2017) was Sarastro, exuding wisdom and kindness through his unaffected bearing and incomparably rich, homogeneous sound.
He returned to the Met for performances of Die Zauberflöte in the David Hockney/John Cox staging seen here late winter of 1998 just shy of his 60th birthday and still “had it” in spades. You can be atheist or agnostic and, if you nonetheless believe in the humanity Kurt Moll’s Sarastro embodies in this prayer, know that your spirituality is intact.
