La Cieca has just been informed that Anita Rachvelishvili will make her Met debut in the title role of Carmen on January 5, 2011, replacing Kate Aldrich, who has withdrawn preggers. La Rachvelishvili also sings Carmen on January 8 and 13. Wait, there’s more!
Elina Garanca (who’s the Carmen for the earlier bulk of that Bizet run here in New York) has canceled a “slew” (as the saying goes) of European concert dates, or maybe has canceled some of the cancellations. This is what her website shows, and La Cieca would be gratified if you could inform her what the cross-out cancellations mean: canceled, or not canceled?

James Jorden (who wrote under the names "La Cieca" and "Our Own JJ") was the founder and editor of parterre box. During his 20 year career as an opera critic he wrote for the New York Times, Opera, Gay City News, Opera Now, Musical America and the New York Post. He also raised his voice in punditry on National Public Radio. From time to time he directed opera, including three unsuccessful productions of Don Giovanni. He also contributed a regular column on opera for the New York Observer. James died in October 2023.
