The Guy for the job

Köln’s current Rigoletto, the debonair Korean baritone Insik Choi, is this week’s Grand Tier Grab Bag featured artist.

Baritone Insik Choi is in his 11th year as a member of the ensemble at Oper Köln, but today’s clip shows that the Korean baritone hopefully has bigger things on the horizon.

Singing everything from Enrico to Orestes, Choi has certainly gotten the most out of his Fest experience in Köln, but this past summer in Aix offered some good exposure for Choi, whose exquisitely elegant performance as Guy de Monfort under Daniele Rustioni is featured here today.

Choi is currently wrapping up a run as Rigoletto in Köln, and his remaining appearances for the season announced so far appear to still be Köln-centric; in November, he’ll play all four villains in Stefan Herheim’s Les contes d’Hoffmann and he returns to Verdi next spring for a run of performances as Macbeth.
