Sorrowful mystery

As tenor Pene Pati continues his Rodolfo-across-America tour, parterre box presents a snippet of his role debut as Werther from earlier this year.

Pati, who is currently starring in La bohème in Chicago and migrates to a garret in San Francisco in June, will soon turn his attention to more virtuosic repertoire with performances of Les Pêcheurs de perles and Mitridate, re di Ponto in Aix and Salzburg, respectively, before returning to this role at the Opéra Comique in January. How do you think this clip bodes for that change of tack?

Meanwhile, Pati’s Charlotte, budding French mezzo Adèle Charvet, will make a rare US appearance for an Easter Oratorio in Cleveland in two weeks and this clip whets one’s appetite to hear more such limpid singing this side of the Atlantic.
