The New York Times:

Last night an audience of good size assembled to hear “Il Trovatore.” An excellent performance was given, although the conducting of Louis Saar was frequently trying to the singers. Signor Tamagno appeared once more as Manrico and sang half a dozen high C’s in “Di quella pira,” to the intense delight of his audience. He had to give two repetitions of the aria. Mme. Nordica sang Leonora very creditably, considering that she had sung Donna Anna the previous night. Mlle. Jane di Vigne was a very weak Azucena, but Signor Campanari was excellent as Il Conte di Luna.

Happy 77th birthday soprano Judith Blegen.

On this day in 1996 the 25th Anniversary Gala for conductor James Levine took place at the Met.
