So much is expected of him at this exact moment – and he delivers. The ease and simplicity with which he is able to deliver such a memorable performance, and at such a high level, despite the pressure of knowing that all eyes are on him, is something I really respect and admire. One thing my teacher always says is that you must have a cool head and a warm heart, not a hot head and a cold heart – and that’s exactly the sense I get from Pavarotti’s performance of this piece. The way he shapes his phrases in such a powerful and meaningful way has always inspired me as a musician and is something I still strive to perfect in my craft.
A favorite Donizetti performance from Lawrence Brownlee
The thing that inspires me about Pavarotti’s performance here is that this is the piece within the opera that everyone in the audience is waiting to hear.
