Our most recent Regie quiz provided a rare occasion on which La Cieca can perform her own victory cantata the celebrate the defeat of the nimble minds of the cher public, as no one was able to identify the mystery production as our dear friend Tosca! This unfamiliar makeover of the diva opera par excellence transpired at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt as directed by Stefano Poda. When Quanto Painy Fakor said “Hamlet,” ianw2 replied, “You know what, you may be right.” Well played, gentlemen! The production in question was in fact Thomas’ Hamlet, as directed by Olivier Py for the Theater an der Wien, complete with a naked Stéphane Degout!

No such treats, perhaps, in our next quiz, but La Cieca hopes the cher public will puzzle out the identity of the opera after the jump.

But—perhaps understandably—nobody hit on the right answer, which is Handel’s Deidamia, as directed for De Nederlandse Opera by your occasional fellow parterrian David Alden. Even if no one guessed the correct opera on our most recent Regie quiz, Our Own Batty Masetto did the next best or perhaps even better thing by devising the silliest scenario. And it’s not like it was easy, either, since the work in question was Auber’s Le Cheval de bronze, as directed by Frank Hilbrich for the Komische Oper. We remain (apparently) in the exotic East for our next quiz, after the jump.

Well, if there’s a lesson to be learned from our most recent Regie quiz, cher public, it is this: trust your gut. Manou was on the right track but lost faith, which left cosmodimontevergine to win the laurel. The opera was indeed Adriana Lecouvreur, as seen at Oper Frankfurt in a production by Vincent Boussard with costumes by no less than Christian Lacroix! Heavens, what with breakdown of the site a couple weeks ago, the Regie quiz has been forgotten for all too long! The answer to the previous edition (which as La Cieca recalls it, someone guessed correctly) is Schoenberg’s Von Heute auf Morgen, as produced by John Fulljames at the Opéra national de Lyon. And now, something more from “Gestern,” if you get my drift.

Some good guesses on our previous Regie quiz, cher public, but nobody hit the bullseye. Admittedly, you were aiming at a rather teeny target, namely Il trionfo del tempo e del disinganno, directed by Jürgen Flimm at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. However, La Cieca is awarding special mention to DharmaBray for a clever and witty pasticcio that sounds vastly more entertaining than The Enchanted Island.

Yet another of the institutions of parterre, the Regie Quiz, seems to have slipped away from us, temporarily at least, with the most recent puzzler over a month ago. And yet, with all that time to ponder, not a single member of the cher public identified the work correctly! It was La Damnation de Faust, as produced for the Staatstheater Stuttgart by Andrea Moses. Don’t worry, parterriani, you’ll have plenty of chances to guess the Regie in the new year, starting right after the jump.

Indeed those were Cretan windmills seen in the most recent Regie quiz, and once that fact was established, manou and MontyNostry quickly closed the case: the opera is indeed Idomeneo, as performed at the Tiroler Landestheater in a production by Peer Boysen. No shortage of interesting guesses, but~~, alas, none of the cher public were~~ only MontyNostry was able to identify last week’s Regie quiz by the three images chosen. The opera, in fact, was Pikovaya Dama, and that lady taking a nap in her corset in the third photo is none other than the title character. The production, by Peter Konwitschny, is currently in the repertory at the Graz Opera.

Among a number of very amusing guesses (bravi tutti!) at last week’s Regie quiz, our Camille actually was not too far off. No, it wasn’t Menotti, but it was a children’s opera, a new work called Mikropolis (“Die abenteuerliche Insektenoper von Christian Jost“) as performed at the Komische Oper Berlin. A more standard piece (though, obviously, in a less than standard production) follows the jump.

The little gray cells of operalover9001 were functioning at full capacity last week, raciocinating that the fuller-figured soloists must imply a heavier sing. And, yes, the mystery opera was a very hard sing indeed, Les Troyens at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, directed by David Hermann. This week’s quiz promises to be as difficult to guess as Énée is to perform, so cast your eyes past the jump.

It takes an Ercole Farnese to recognize Verdi done the Regie way, and he was exactly right that the opera in last week’s quiz was Un ballo in maschera. He did miss the mark on the character depicted: the heavily made-up figure in the sunglasses and plumed hat was not Ulrica but Riccardo (Wookyung Kim). The venue for Elisabeth Stöppler‘s staging was the Semperoper Dresden.

Some good guesses, but, no, last week’s Regie quiz was neither Ariadne auf Naxos nor Auntie Mame, but rather that faded valentine that the occasional opera buff years to see revived: Thomas’ Mignon. (That blonde was, obviously Titania.) The staging was done for the Buxton Festival by Annilese Miskimmon.

It was E-news, as quick and accurate as the name would imply, who first zoomed in on last week’s Regie quiz. The piece depicted was indeed I due Figaro, one of those “other” Figaro operas, this one by Saverio Mercadante, as performed at the Salzburg Pfingstfestspiele in a production by Emilio Sagi.

Too many cooks spoil the Regie

This week it was operalover9001 (so many of you!) who managed to narrow down the repertoire to a handful of titles, of which The Rape of Lucretia turned out to be accurate. After all, how many operas are there that feature Nathan Gunn taking a massage in leather pants? (I said how many are there, not how many should there be!) Keith Warner’s new production at the Theater an der Wien even won kudos from the exacting Likely Impossibilities!

Anyway, La Cieca hopes this next quiz doesn’t rub any of you the wrong way.

Par le Regie et par l’opulence

In a whole month of guessing at our most recent Regie quiz, only Melot’s Younger Brother and PirateJenny were able to narrow in on what is after all a very fringey part of the opera repertoire: Graun’s Montezuma, with a libretto by Frederick the Great. (The work was directed for the Edinburgh International Festival by Claudio Valdés Kuri.)
