Ah, finally a light begins to break: “60 Minutes is filming a long-planned segment on the Met, with the new production of Rigoletto providing a through line…. When [Michael] Mayer sprints down the aisles onto the stage to tweak a bit of business, he is trailed not just by a couple of staff directors with notebooks but often by a cameraman or two. A Japanese film crew has also been tailing him for its own documentary.” [New York Times]

From the House of Atreus

The team that made the Met’s 2009 production of From the House of the Dead one of the undisputed highlights of the Peter Gelb era will return five years from now to create a Richard Strauss tragedy.  According to Helsingin Sanomat, director Patrice Chéreau and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen will collaborate on a new production of Elektra in 2016, to be shared between the Met and La Scala.

Great moments in synergy, 2011 edition

Of all places, NY1’s “Inside City Hall” is the setting for an opera roundtable  tonight when John Adams, Peter Sellars, James Maddalena, and Peter Gelb appear on the program to discuss the impending premiere of Nixon in China at the Met. “Inside City Hall” airs at 7 p.m. tonight with a special edition after the State of the Union.
