Please, someone, explain to me why Relyea is deemed a star. To me he is Covent Garden's answer to Met and Vicar favourite Susannah Glanville. He's surely the Joseph Roukeau de nos hours, or maybe not even as good as that.

I am a couple of days behind because the RSS feed isn't working, but I was going to mention the Copenhagen Ring for just that reason. At the end of Rheingold, the gods are seen ascending to Valhalla, a massive high-rise building, on one of those platforms that window-washers use (which sounds dumb but works in context), and waving to the implied crowds below: at the end of Götterdämmerung, the platform slowly descends to show the gods, standing in the same positions, burnt to carbon and still aflame, and the effect is literally hair-raising.

Joyce El-K is about to open as Violetta with Welsh National Opera, following in the footsteps of June Anderson 25 years ago, and she will star in a diva role in a new Opera Rara recording - plus RFH concert - this Autumn.

I have been watching and listening to those clips from I Due Foscari I posted over and over and omg I think it is so great. Perhaps especially the big ensemble that ends the second act. Once again, I point out that this production starts in LA but will then be taken to Valencia, Vienna and London. It will coincide with Verdi's bicentennial next year and a more worthy Verdi opera to receive international exposure and re-assessment does not exist in my opinion.
I would be much more sympathetic to a rant about a season of six operas that includes two Puccinis.
LA Opera with its recovered voices and Britten series was one of the most interesting US companies. It is a shame they have dropped those but the financially disastrous (but artistically adventurous) Freyer Ring brought the company to the brink of closure according to what I have read. They are doing well to keep going.

I am confused here. Unless there is another Carmen with Alagna and Garanca, the one from the Met has Elizabeth Caballero as Frasquita.

I did a quich search and <a href="http://archives.metoperafamily.org/archives/scripts/cgiip.exe/WService=BibSpeed/fullcit.w?xCID=353311&limit=5000&xBranch=ALL&xsdate=&xedate=&theterm=Elizabeth%20Caballero&x=0&xhomepath=http://archives.metoperafamily.org/archives/&xhome=http://archives.metoperafamily.org/archives/bibpro.htm" rel="nofollow">the Metropolitan Opera archive page</a> shows her name and she certainly is both my recoding from the TV broadcast and the DVD I got from my sister in law on last year's Christmas. Are we thinking of a different Carmen DVD?

Thanks for the expressions of Whitney love y'all. If one is as passionate about opera as we its no stretch to understand how the loss of a personal icon can be devastating. Indeed, there's no question that without Whitney I wouldn't be the person I am today. She was the first transcendent artist to capture my imagination, steal my heart and win my undying devotion (even in those moments when we all laughed at her demanding to "see the receipts!") Her second album, "Whitney," came out as I was approaching my 7th birthday and when my parents brought it home I experienced the 7 year old version of that rapturous moment when a set of chords vibrate the echo chambers of your soul. Of course I loved all the hits from that record, but this simple, understated ballad is what stays with me. She became such a diva (and after the Bodyguard a bit of a self-indulgent one) that it's easy to forget she once put in vocal masterworks like this. I learned about acting with the voice, fioritura and chiaroscuro at the feet of Whitney Houston's voice long before falling for classical music.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMhpi6y7O1s

Whitney was also the artist who got the wheels in my head turning on coming to realize that I wasn't like the other boys. Anectdotal evidence had been building, but my aspiration to *be* this woman when I grew up seemed entirely natural. If anything, it seemed queer that any boy person would rather mature into something like Hulk Hogan and not this talented and beautiful woman. I am grateful my parents had me in a quaker school, who knows how many times my impromptu Whitney performances on the playground would have been met with fists rather than the confused fascination of my dozen or so fellows. Whitney didn't teach me how to be myself, she demonstrated that being yourself comes only from an overwhelming and uncontrollable passion to express what is inside. If I hadn't tapped into that side of my emotional world via Whitney would I have come out at 15? Spent hours at the library in high school listening to musicals and opera? Followed my dream to become an academic? Who can say. Dear Whitney, despite your massive fame and celebrity and my own very public engagement with your career I know that "a few stolen moments is all that we shared" and I will treasure those forever. Rest In Peace.

Interesting observation! I can't believe that Maazel would have let her get away with that, as it were, so maybe it was something they agreed between them. Listening again, it does mean that momentum is maintained and the aria doesn't tip over into the cloying stasis that some see as 'expressive' in Puccini. Keeping it moving (tempo-wise) can help keep it moving (emotion-wise).

It's interesting that she sings consistently ahead of the beat. There are singers who sing consistently behind the beat (Freni, Millo), but I've never head one who sings ahead of the beat.

<I>Perhaps when Agresta and Giannattasio get an exclusive recording contract with EMI, DG or Decca, the Met will knock at their door.</I>

That's what I meant, but was unable to express as well as you did: there is a whole power infrastructure to which we owe the International Style trend.

Incidentally, Maria Luigia Borsi will be Liu in this year's Chorégies d'Orange <I>Turandot</I> (the same festival that last year gave us a stunning <I>Rigoletto</I> with Nucci, Ciofi and Grigolo).

I came home late to read the sad news on line. I find myself feeling much the same as I felt when I learned that Michael Jackson had died. I truly talented performer, lost to demons that would not be controlled. It is really sad to think of all of the unrealized artistic potential that will never be shared with the world.

Hi Marshie. Too bad we probably don't live in the same city (I am on the left coast, in San Francisco), otherwise we could meet over coffee and discuss the Ring till the oows came home. On the topic of what to call the "apotheosis of Brunhilde theme", you are correct that it is first sung to the words, "Herstes wunder." The following line (sung to the same tune) is "Herliche Maid". The "herliche maid" is clearly Brunhilde, but it's a valid point of debate whether or not the music refers to Sieglinde's pregnancy or to Brunhilde's offer to stay and face Wotan's wrath so that Sieglinde can escape with her in utero child.

That's one of the things I love about mature Wagner. It really is hard to pin down his lietmotifs to a single interpretation. The music could refer to Brunhilde. Or to Brunhilde's role in protecting the life of the in utero Siegfried. Or to Sieglinde's response to the knowledge of her pregnancy. Or to all of the above.

One thing I know for sure. We both love this music intensely. And I feel a kinship with anyone who loves the Ring with the intensity that you clearly do.

I would add Maria Lugia Borsi, a soprano in her mid 30s, to the group. She has been singing all over Europe. I've seen her in Bohème and Butterfly, and her vocal delivery and fraseggio reminds me of the old fashioned Italian sopranos of yore.

Perhaps when Agresta and Giannattasio get an exclusive recording contract with EMI, DG or Decca, the Met will knock at their door.

<i>"...if someone did a survey and asked 100 people leaving a LAO performance what 3 operas they’d like the company to put on, not one of them would say I Due Foscari...</i>

and how many would say "L'Amour De Loin?"

Again, the reason I'm annoyed (not angry -- what operas LAO does doesn't justify that emotion like so many other things in this ghastly world we live in) is that it's a Domingo vanity project, AGAIN. Full stop.

I guarantee you, would bet you a full seasons subscription in the Founders Circle, if someone did a survey and asked 100 people leaving a LAO performance what 3 operas they'd like the company to put on, not one of them would say <i>I Due Foscari</i>.

Again, lacking a list of all the operas LAO have ever done my memory is fuzzy, but they've done the infinitely superior <i>Don Carlo(s)</i> once, in the 4 act version with a hideous all-gray wall set (corrections gladly welcomed). If Domingo is so intent on doing baritone stuff, why not add Rodrigo to the 14,238 roles he's already done? Have they done <i>La Forza del Destino</i>? When's the last time they did <i>Falstaff</i>, the late 80's?

Yes, those pieces are costlier to do, but that's what co-productions are for.

No, no King Roger in Santa Fe, there's nothing else they're doing to justify the expense. I'm still kicking myself for not selling my parents in to slavery so that I could have gone to the <i>L'amour de Loin</i> there or the production now playing in Toronto. However, as my Dad wisely pointed out, I'm 52, not 22, I have to be a little more fiscally responsible. Damn adulthood, damn. it. to. hell.

I do not really understand the anger about LAO doing Foscari (and especially being angry about playing something as unusual as Foscari at the same time as one is ranting about boring and unadventorous repertoire....). I just listened to it and I very much enjoyed it. Some stunning parts and nothing that is bad - and it is a nice and short opera...

Domingo as I Due Foscari, well, whether you think the sound is right or not, he had big successes as Simon Boccanegra at La Scala, Covent Garden, Metropolitan and in Berlin, so assuming that he will be up to singing the elder Foscari is not totally far fetched (notwithstanding that some might not like him in baritone roles).

But I would tend to agree that the other operas seem too tame, too much old warhorses. I understand focusing on popular operas but why not at least a concert performance of a Britten opera or something from the Recovered Voices series which I understand was at least critical successes?

On the other hand, the casting is not bad. Poplavskaya should be interesting (even though Angela Meade might be more suited for the part), likewise seeing Owens as Sharpless (which I cannot really imagine - but I have heard bassbaritones as Sharpless before which was actually ok). Angela Meade should be a good Donna Anna. i could also mention Elisabeth Matos, Jay Hunter Morris etc.

It was broadcast continuously on the plane as I left NYC and I was so sorry to hear the news. A wonderfully talented woman, with many years she should still have lived. I am so sorry, honey. Say your prayers, whatever they be, for her as she needs them. Love from Me.

I6 you spend six hours on a Wednesday night with that machine you WILL be sick, so scotch that idea! Besides, pretty sure you are correct about the lack of repetitions on the Ring! Do go to the Ernani, though--even with Marcello Giordani--it will be worth your time, if you like early Verdi. 'Twas the first evening I've spent in the house wherein my nerves were not jangling at the end, from all the caterwauling.
Hope winter is nice in Tucson!

Hang in there my friend OpNeo. I also adored her!
Tonight I saw my entire 1980s and 90s pass all in a flash like a kaleidoscope, and she was so much part of that life of a NYC faggot. I am very sad indeed. Only about a year ago I was at Vinyl on 8th Ave, and saw the sisters doing their thing, to this, and loved it as ever:
