Cher Public

Broadcast: Il trovatore

Yet another whack at Trovatore tonight starting at 7:25, cher public!

  • Camille

grimoaldo === have you got any preferred versions of RInaldo that I could brush up with before I go hear it next month?

oooooooh! I like the costumes in the Pizzi production! Thanks for the suggestions as now I know what to listen to. I’d had an idea the René Jacobs might be one, and I always love to hear Podles yodels! Thanks so much, grimoaldo, maestro della cappella handeliana!!’

I never fail to marvel at what a romana di Roma Bartoli is — she looks like the face of Mamma Roma!! I’ve seen so many girls who looked something similar to her there, that is!

        • grimoaldo2

Yes the Pizzi production is a lot of fun, they ride around on wooden horsies a lot.
Podles is of course wonderful in that recording, don’t know why the first one isn’t showing up with a picture, it has Vivica Genaux and Miah Persson, very good

This performance would be total dullsville if it were not for Anita R

  • LaFavorita

    Caballe, Berganza, Domingo, Carreras, Pons?

  • swordsnsolvers

I’ll be seeing this production next season here in Chicago next season cause I simply must hear Russell Thomas live as Manrico. Too bad that by all accounts it is a typical dark, dingy David McVicar farrago with the typical supply of shirtless supers.

  • grimoaldo2

It is like entering a different world when Anita R starts to sing, she is so superior to all the others

  • LaFavorita

    Growley sounds very different tonight.

  • Camille

Transposition again. All that for a faked high C (B)—-

I’ve had it. Hitting the hay. They can all go die on their own accounts as I’ve had it with this Trovatore, an opera I love. Oh jezzzzuz! What was THAT? THE DRUID DUDES FROM NORMA?

    • grimoaldo2

I couldn’t face it again, I stepped out on to the veranduh.

  • swordsnsolvers

Again this ghastly scream from the chorus/supers.

  • Apulia

taking a break from work and heard the fake C and then the following soprano aria--shouldn’t have taken the break--back to work

  • Susan Brodie

Is that phone in the house or one of my neighbors?

  • LaFavorita

I feel like she’s singing on muscle, not breath.

    • Apulia

      exactly

  • Susan Brodie

    Too many cringe-worthy moments.

    • grimoaldo2

Anita R and the chorus and the orchestral music are the only good things about this performance

  • Amika

I missed the first half…just tuned in, and to me Luca Salsi sounds wonderful. What happened with his Il balen?

    • grimoaldo2

He sounded coarse and hoarse and very uncomfortable

  • grimoaldo2

This is also a yawn of a conductor, I remember performances when those chords at the start of the scene are stunning effects

    • Susan Brodie

I normally agree but was just thinking that he seems more invested than usual. I tend to avoid his performances but tonight he seems to be doing more than just following the singers.

  • grimoaldo2

ah, beautiful singing Anita R! the reason I have stuck to this otherwise provincial level performance until the end (albeit stepping out onto the verahduh during the tenor’s big scenes)

    • LaFavorita

Is “veranduh” a euphemism for something?

      • grimoaldo2

Not really, I was quoting what Betsy Bobolink always used to say, I just meant I did not listen to it as I heard him on the first listen live and that was enough,

      • Luvtennis

She usually used it to denote an overwhelming need to be elsewhere so she could engage in extended private sexual reverie. So yeah…..

  • DonCarloFanatic

That wasn’t quite as bad as I expected--probably because I didn’t listen very closely most of the time.

  • grimoaldo2

Well night all, those of you who stuck it through, thank God for Anita R

  • grimoaldo2

I had to listen to a few minutes of this to get this very lacklustre, except for Anita R, performance, out of my head

Absolutely perfect, except for the sound, amazing all round, especially perhaps Mehta, very underestimated how important the conductor is in Trovatore and NO CUTS!!!

  • operajunky

I know I’m a little late to the party, but what the hell was this noise tonight? Rowley just grates on my ears. Her tendency to swoop/slide her way into notes just makes my ears bleed, and that’s BEFORE her squally high notes!

Lee is going to blow out his voice, mark my words. The way he clenches his sound cannot be healthy.

Will someone please put Salsi out of my misery? He sounds like present day James Morris, which is not good for a baritone in his early forties. The tepid applause spoke volumes.
