Cher Public

Fat chance

It’s Choose Your Own Sir John Day at parterre, cher public: you have the choice of hearing Falstaff performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at 1:00 PM or Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor live from Staatstheater Kassel at 1:05 PM.

Fat Sir John was, as it happens, one of my father’s nicknames for me from infancy onwards. (It was not his only literary nickname for me. Others were Destructive Desmond -- Auden & Isherwood, you know -- and Pimblechook -- Dickens. For both my brother and me, he coined Shagrat and Gorbag, after the fratricidal orcs in The Lord of the Rings.)

But this entire thread reminds me that Amore Opera is reviving its delightful production (the New York premiere!) from last spring of Donizetti’s La Zingara. There will be two performances, tomorrow night (Tuesday) and Saturday afternoon, with full orchestra, sets, costumes, bel canto singing, the works, at the Riverside Theater (behind Riverside Church and with far better acoustics) on Claremont Avenue, behind Barnard College and up (or down) the street from Columbia University and the Manhattan School of Music.
