John Eliot Gardiner’s “Monteverdi at 450” cycle began last night in Chicago with L’ORFEO. Brilliant sonorities, gorgeous singing and playing, slow tempi. The Orfeo, Polish tenor Kristin Adam, is simply a wonder. He has a beautiful, rich voice that easily filled the cavernous Harris Theatre, superb technique and great stage presence. The ovations went on and on.

Is anybody going to the Ruby Hughes recital at Carnegie Hall tonight? I was at high school with her -- I’d be very interested to hear any reports.

This is just overwhelming!! Here’s is what I heard from today’s birthday girl, lovely Leona Mitchell and her singing partner, Luis Lima, all those years abo (thinking it was 1986) at Teatro dell’Opera, and by which I have always conserved the fondest memory. They were both young and beautiful, totally convincing in their roles. What a treat to re-live that long ago evening. Let me listen to hear if my memory holds up.

MY VOTE for greatest Met broadcast ever…1/21/39..My dumb parents never took me as a third birthday present………………… note the “E tu,ripeti il giuro” and the young Warren “Orrrrrore” NO ONE tops this cast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
