Cher Public

The season officially begins

Says the Met’s press office: “Aleksandrs Antonenko will sing Calàf in Puccini’s Turandot from October 12 to November 16 replacing Marcelo Álvarez, who is ill.”

Oh goody! The cancellations have BEGUN!!!

  • CCorwinNYC

Unsure if this is good news or bad.

  • Bill

Alvarez had also cancelled his Trovatore Manricos in Vienna
the first weeks of the season early September due to illness
replaced by Netrebko’s husband. Incidentally in an interview just now with Ion Holender in the Austrian press which was specifically about opera fees for singers and his own frugality when Intendant of the Vienna Opera, he stated that Netrebko would not
be appearing at the Salzburger Festspiele in 2018 as she and
her husband were going to be on a world wide concert tour
during that time which was expected to be very very lucrative. That would mean if she is to do Lisa in Pique Dame in Salzburg as was mentioned here some weeks ago, it would not be until 2018 in any case.

I think the thought is Summer 2019 or 2020

  • Mr Antonenko sang Samson in Paris with Anita Rachvelishvili in the Michieletto production. Vocally powerful but I had the impression it took him some time to warm up dramatically on the night I was there. I quote myself: “Then, after bringing down the act 2 curtain with a ringing “Trahison!”, in act 3 he acted up a storm, vocally (including some of those howling, Russian-style “wounded bear” sounds) and physically.”

  • Not a big fan of either but I’d rather have Antonenko as Calaf than an overparted Alvarez (who is the better singer).

I just finished listening to the BBC broadcast of Turandot from Covent Garden in July. Antonenko was pretty hard to tolerate in the highest notes of Calaf: wobbly, strained, at times unbearable. The middle of his voice is much better preserved, but that isn’t enough for this role. I’m glad that I exchanged my ticket months ago, long before this announcement.
