A friend sees her Traviata at La Fenice tonight…Beautiful voice….
    I must tell Virginia…….BTW 9/7 is Angela’s birthday…well,anyway MOST Romanians are audible

  • NO ONE will believe this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will try to be as delicate and reserved in telling you that I just got a call from my friend who is watching Marcu’s Traviata in la Fenice. (only 1000 seats!!!!). It is Robert Carsen production. I will just give you one excerpt from the staging….READY?
Violetta sings “Sempre Libera” on the bed with her latest client, il Barone…and I SWEAR I am not making this up…but as she sings the rapid top notes, guess what the Baron BEHIND HER on the bed is doing to her…..YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is also a simulated Cunning Linguist section.(Well, that can moisten the vocal chords.)
Gee.that might make a lot of sopranos sound BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!! Imagine saying to Callas..or Melba or ANYONE….”While you sing, the Barone will…………………
Also she keeps opening drawers and taking out money (out of her DRAWERS>>>???)
Take this crap and boo it off the stage…….This is the modern way????? I will take a La Puma staging in a Junior High..with a table…..
He also said she has big intonation problems…He will call me after the next act, and I expect that in the Gambling Scene, Germont will enter dressed as Norma!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Baltsamic Vinaigrette

What else is new? The Volksbühne’s Frank Castorf had Erda go down on Wotan in Siegfried in Bayreuth. Indeed another Berliner, the Schaubühne’s Thomas Ostermeier, treated Dublin Theatre Festival audiences to simulated male-on-male oral in a German-language Hamlet in 2014. If they’re not careful, some directors may themselves in a writs-at-dawn schmozzle of the “Hey, you’ve stolen my brilliant idea!” variety ere long.

    • Porgy Amor

I doubt anyone here is going to be that shaken up by a breathless secondhand account of the latest airing of a 13-year-old production.

I’ve seen the scene done with both Ciofi and Bakanova.
Assuming the revival direction is not getting creative, Violetta and the Baron are only very briefly on a bed, clothed, and nothing much of a sexual nature happens. Then she stands and he kneels in front of her, but there is no cunnilingus (at least, in what is shown on the stage). The vagina is located lower on a woman’s body than the mid-abdomen.

Your final sentence is not just a masterwork of gentlemanly understatement but proof positive of that old saw “Discretion is the better part of valour”. Bravo e bis.

Domingo, Carreras, and Gheorghiu sing together to honor Pavarotti -- Arena di Verona, just now. The video creeped me out -- I hate aging!
