I know PASSION is not a universally beloved work, but the original production remains a foundational experience for me, and Donna Murphy’s Fosca one of the three or four best theater performances (out of 1500+) I’ve ever seen.

I love Passion. I wish there were clips of Racette and Burden in the Minnesota Opera production.

RawStory is a bunch of clowns.

I wish I’d seen that production.

On Anne Sofie’s birthday, a memory of the time she and Marc Minkowski came together to take part in this madness and joy:

LOVE Von Otter, her Ottavia for Gardiner is astonishing.

    • Daniel Swick

She is the only recorded Ariodante who genuinely dominates this extraordinarily difficult aria. I love LHL and JDD but LHL runs out of breath and JDD takes it gingerly and robs it of the necessary propulsion.

        Um, Janet Baker.

        • PCally

A matter of taste. I like Baker fine but find Von Otter to be a bit more interesting and more spontaneous as an artist. And while I know a common Von Otter criticism (not completely inaccurate) is that her timbre isn’t anything special but personally I’ve felt that way about Baker in a lot of stuff, including this opera.

Patricia Racette will make her debut as a stage director in a new production of La traviata at the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis next May.

  • NEWS! Just announced: Jonas Kaufmann has cancelled tomorrow’s “Tosca” at Wiener Staatsoper. Gheorghiu cancelled earlier today. It will be Serafin and Antonenko! Also Philipp Stölzl is out of the Osterfestspiele Salzburg “Tosca” (2018), replaced by Michael Sturminger. And Benjamin Bruns has announced that he will not pursue his role debut as Pelléas, so the new productions at Wiener Staatsoper (June) goes to Adrian Eröd, who was just awarded the title of Kammersänger this week.

Jonas is becoming like a Bigfoot or a UFO…

The new Bonnie and Clyde of opera, Jonas and Angie… rehearsals were to intense for both of them ;-)

It becomes very frustrating to try to see Jonas K. in operas these days. I wonder if he will show up in next fall Don Carlos in Paris, a brand new Warlikowski production! Oh well, there is still Garanca, Yoncheva, Adbrazakov and Tezier to watch … as long as there is still ticket left when it opens to public! ;)
