Cher Public

Broadcast: La traviata

La Cieca invites the cher public (pictured, you do the math) to discuss tonight’s broadcast of La traviata from the Met, starting at 7:25 PM.

  • Cameron Kelsall

Where’s Quinn Kelsey when you need him? Hell, I’ll take Domingo at this point.

    • Camille

Of all the Domingo baritone essays this seemed to work better. Or DId

      • G.R. Downtown

Interestingly Hampson here sounds like what you would think an aged tenor would sound like in this part. For Maestro Domingo, Germont is probably the best of the baritone roles he has done. I know it’s a principal role, but it is really more of a star cameo part. As for the title character roles, Simon Boccanegra seems to work the best.

  • cielo e mar

    No, not Placebo!

    • Cameron Kelsall

It couldn’t be worse, could it?

      • Rowna Sutin

        Correct -- the worst

        • celmo

Really sad. Think it is time to close his career in opera and do the occasional recital.

          • Cameron Kelsall

that’s been my impression for a decade or more. when he ain’t barkin’, he’s croonin’.

            nevertheless, he persists. :/

    • Camille

Hahahaha! Well there is also George Petean.

OmGod--we lost the connection so I’m back to beginning of Act II. Okay I hear Fab y again!

  • cielo e mar

    He’s gargling!!!

  • Brackweaver

TH is not at his current best-perhaps he’s unwell? The other two are having a few issues that don’t seem to bother anyone.

    • Cameron Kelsall

No honey, that’s just how he sounds these days.

  • Camille

How he sings this with a different tone is very good. This is getting better as it progresses. Oh here comes hampsong

I may go to this sooner rather than later as I’d planned.

  • Ivy Lin

Wow Luisotti doing a mercy rush for Hampson in this concertato …

  • Brackweaver

    MF’s Italian was appreciated.

    • Amika

Can’t say the same about SY. Pathetic.

      • Camille

She needs to learn what the words actually mean. Very little expression
or use of the text. È strano!

  • cielo e mar

As Opera Teen said earlier, Luisotti a bit relentless. Fabiano is a bit over the top for me, but the voice sounds right as Alfredo. Yoncheva impressive. Annina is AWful.

    • Camille

Wasn’t the Annina announced as a debut? Maybe she doesn’t understand the acoustic?

  • cielo e mar

Am I alone, or isn’t one verse of “Addio del passato” enough?

    • Amika

No, it isn’t. Definitely need both verses.

      • cielo e mar

        Son solo!

    • Camille

      Due! Otherwise what’s the point?

  • cielo e mar

    Tempi bizarre here.

  • Camille

I’ll give it some time before I go but I realy want hear Giannattasio sing this as perhaps she’ll make more of the text.

Oh no Annina was not a debut — just too many performances 400+!

Hampson debuted in 1986? Well that’s why it sounds the way it does.

    Basta. Buonanotte

    • Cameron Kelsall

I want to hear Giannattasio, too. I understand she’s a frequent canceler, though, so I don’t want to buy tickets too far in advance and end up with a cover.

      • Camille

Is that so? I shall bear it in mind. She gave a kind of interesting Leonora in Trovatore a few years back—I filed her in “C U Again Sometime”, but now have kittle recollection of the voice. Only trouble is, I have to choose between the devil and the deep blue sea: Hampson vs Domingo, and Hampson only has two dates. So—unless I want to see a legend I’ll have to step lively. I have to go hear the Yonch in teatro first though to get a better idea of the voice as my impression varies too much from time to time. Alas.

        • Armerjacquino

Having seen both Giannattasio and Yoncheva in the last couple of years (Mimi and Norma respectively) I’d take Yoncheva fifteen times out of ten.

          • Camille

Yes, I got this note. I listened a bit to her yesterday and she has her issues, Yoncheva has others. I’ll listen to both, most likely. but Thanks for the thoughts.
