LohengrinLa Cieca’s spies in Dresden (oh, they are legion!) report that there were HD cameras aplenty in the Semperoper at Wednesday night’s performance of Lohengrin, i.e., the one after the free “plazacast” last Sunday. This fact strongly indicates some kind of commercial release of the video, whether on a streaming service such as ARTE or else on disc for DGG (a label at which Anna Netrebko, Piotr Beczala and Christian Thielemann all have contracts, conveniently enough!)

what wonderful news! The clips anna has been posting on instagram have been great teasers. And while it’ll be wonderful to have a commercial document, many thanks must also be given to whomever recorded the performance that was posted on here a few days ago. It’s such a joy to be able to hear these voices with a realistic acoustic rather than miked and rebalanced. Beczala’s voice sounds as beautiful as it really is when heard live and herlitzius sounds far less harsh and ugly compared with her DVDs. Most of all it’s thrilling to hear anna soar over the ensembles and spin those long soft lines into the hall. Wish commercial DVDs were able to capture this aspect of live performance better.

    • Co-signing this. They are both much better in the hall than on recording, but I find that especially so with Becza?a.

Most of Thielemann’s series of performances at the Vienna State Opera have appeared on CD on DGG -- perhaps not yet
the Ariadne (Isokoski) and the Hansel last December but they surely will eventually appear. I would think the Dresden Lohengrin will also appear sometime in the
future at least as a CD if not filmed on DVD.

Since Anna brings all of her triumphs to the MET, please LaCieca, tell us what production do you think of Lohengrin they will attempt? Do you think Anna will do a Robert Wilson production? or does this mean that we will be getting a David McVicar Lohengrin in NYC?

  • Fun interview:
“Netrebko: I’m doing ‘Lohengrin’ in St. Petersburg, but after that I don’t know. I think I would love the role of Isolde (in ‘Tristan und Isolde’).”

      The complete quotation is:

Netrebko: I’m doing ‘Lohengrin’ in St. Petersburg, but after that I don’t know. I think I would love the role of Isolde (in ‘Tristan und Isolde’).

Beczala: Unsingable! That’s hard stuff, very hard.

Netrebko: I know. That is the one I would like … but I don’t think so. We’ll see.
