Cher Public

Have you seen the proconsul?

Calleja NetrebkoLa Cieca hears that Joseph Calleja will sing Pollione opposite the Norma of Anna Netrebko at the Met for opening night 2017. The pair will be reprising roles they introduced at that Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in September 2016. (Photo: Ken Howard)

  • So much for her “Norma” anytime soon.

    • armerjacquino

It’s April 2016. In the grand scheme of things, September 2016 is pretty soon.

  • The Poet Lenski

Calleja should make an intriguing Pollione. I hope that they give some of the later performances in the run to Russell Thomas, who’s been outstanding in several recent productions.

  • Camille

Excellent news and very happy to hear it as, since the other night, I poked into his future dates at the Met next year and found a paltry three or so Duca di Mantovas, a disappointment and, if you asked me and you didn’t, a waste of a great natural resouce.

There is also Antonenko, whom I enjoyed a lot in the role Pollione in the last edition, Russell Thomas, whom I don’t know at all, and god only knows whatever tenor lurking in the Druidic bushes out there.

  • Cocky Kurwenal

He’s the obvious and best choice. I was expecting Hymel, but very happy it is to be Calleja instead. We’ll find out the whole season tomorrow morning.

    • gustave of montreal

Confused with the seasons . Are we right now into the 2015-16 season and will that Norma appear next Fall for the 2016-17 season or way far in the Fall of the year 2017 ??

      • fletcher

The new season starts in the fall, so we’re in the 2015-16 season now; next season (2016-17) starts with the Trelinski Tristan; the season after that (2017-18) starts with this Norma.

        • gustave of montreal

          Oh thank you.

  • Chenier631

Calleja is an interesting choice. I am glad that they didn’t give the role to a dramatic/Otello type voice, which is totally the wrong type of voice for Pollione.
Antonenko was awful the last time around, screaming and belting his way through it all.
Of course, all eyes (and ears) will be on AN.
I am not thrilled by yet another mezzo Adalgisa,
JDD will be an odd vocal match with AN, to be sure,
but I will see one with Jamie Barton for sure.

    Chenier631

    • Cocky Kurwenal

Are you talking about ROH or Met casting? I sincerely hope JDD is not going to be Adalgisa in London. Barton would be great.

      • Chenier631

JDD is rumoured to be 1st cast Adalgisa at the Met in the fall of 2017.Angela Meade and Jamie Barton are rumoured to be 2nd cast. I don’t know any details about the Covent Garden cast.

        Chenier631

      • stuey cheedio

        It’s Ganassi.

        • Hippolyte

Lordy, Ganassi has been singing Adalgisa a long time--she did it opposite Eaglen at Carnegie Hall in December 1995!

          • stuey cheedio

Well at least one of them will know it…

  • I agree Calleja is a good choice. Too bad Garanca isn’t the Adalgisa. That would’ve made it perfect casting.

    • Will

Perfect casting would be a light lyric soprano with trills and a good coloratura technique--the voice for which Bellini wrote the part.

Damn you, Nerva Nelli!!!!!!!!! You’re still at it!!!

I thought I’d never fall for that one again and when I least suspect it — KABONG! I’VE BEEN MOJCAED AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

          Niemals, Tochter Sodoms!!!!!!!!!

          • I almost clicked but something told me not to… :)

            • Camille

That dreadful Nerva!!! Not only has she destroyed Bianca Castafiore’s career by stating she is older than Famous Quickly, she’s also widely reported her as deceased, when, IN REALITY. Bianca C. di Milano is being held under the SAME MOAT in Venezia where Barnaba drowned povera La Cieca in a Gran Rabbia, threatening her with the same fate should she ever do so much as a peep in public again!! Still, la brava Bianca may be heard, it is said, as far away as Mestre crying out at the top of her lungs “Vi sfido!!!!!” Alas, no one is brave enough to defy La Terribile Nelli and rescue Bianca, La Top Diva Indiscutibilemente del Mondo!

O rabbia! O gelosia! O infamia, infamia! Povera piccola Bianca!!!

      • I know Bellini wrote Adalgisa for soprano and I recall Sumi Jo making a good case for that with Bartoli. But I prefer my Adalgisa to be a lyric mezzo, especially since she has to sing all those thirds below Norma. Call me a philistine. But for me, the perfect pairing of Norma-Adalgisa among today’s singers is Netrebko-Garanca.

        • Camille

Dalila was a Philistine. You’re the Prince of the Persian Empire!!!!

        • Camille

Well, she would be ideal as she is no ordinary dusky “mezzo”, even if the timbre truly is, her extension is quite wonderful. Too bad in a way that she couldn’t make it up for us having to miss out on her Giovanna Seymour a couple years back, a bitter pill to swallow!

After that big honking C natural she sang the other night (instead of the C flat which is written, curiously enough), she most certainly has got all the notes. What a pleasure to listen to such a beautiful voice in full flight and which knows just exactly what it is about, and executes everything required of it so well. Brava. Worth the wait.

          • Camille: As well their voices blending well together, Netrebko and Garanca have great chemistry together as seen in the Vienna Anna Bolena. And yes, it would have made up for that Met Giovanna she wasn’t able to do. A number of years ago, they sang “Mira, O Norma” together in a concert. If I recall, it was beautifully sung but also bland. I think they’ve both grown as artists since then.

            • Camille

Yessir. I bought that DVD, one of my few opera ones, based on Garanca’s performance. She helps up Anna’s game, or at least she did — but now the game has changed since Charles in Charge is in the picture….

      • I’d suggest Sumi Jo. She recorded it so she knows it but I bet you’d never find a major American house that would cast a soprano.

        • armerjacquino

She’s never performed it live, as far as I can see. Just because a singer has recorded a part that doesn’t mean it’s in her rep.

          • But someone suggested lyric soprano and she’d be perfect. And a great contrast to Trebs.

        • Cocky Kurwenal

There’s also a question mark over whether you’d find a major american house that would cast Sumi Jo (in anything), or so it seems.

        • PCally

No major house would hire her because she’s no longer in her prime. There’s a difference between making a recording and a singing a role onstage. Maybe she’d be nice singing it opposite Bartoli or someone similar but I can’t really picture her voice blending at all with Netrebkos, who would probably drown her out anyway. Garanca would be and ideal partner, though a mezzo her sound has a soprano tinge, she has an excellent upper extension, and she would probably sing the role in the soprano keys (which she did on her recording).

          • Cocky Kurwenal

Not solely because she is no longer in her prime, surely? I think Jo was always a slightly unusual case -- uncommonly beautiful voice and coloratura facility, but not quite right for the modern opera world.

            • PCally

Well the last decade or so of her career has taken place almost exclusively in front of a mic and on the Norma I think one can her the voice sounding noticeably thinner and the coloratura more effortful. I’m also not a fan. Having seen her live I can say that at the met at least her voice sounded nothing like it does on recordings.

      • As for soprano Adalgisas, I think that a young Gheorghiu could have been great in the part. Of course, Callas herself would have had to come back from the grave to make Gheorghiu consider a seconda donna role but…

        • rapt

Love the image--doubly appropriate for partnering Draculetta!

        • degan

That would have been something: Callas as Norma and Angie as Adalgisa.
It´s a shame Gheorghiu was always lazy and to cautious to learn Norma, even if it once was announced with Veronesi and Alagna somewhere in Italy.
In future, also Yoncheva could be an interesting choice for Norma.

  • Constantine A. Papas

How AN’s Norma at the ROH was view by critics? I haven’t seen any reviews.

    • The Poet Lenski

You haven’t seen any reviews because it hasn’t happened yet.

  • gloria

Good news -- they will be terrific together and they both like singing at the MET

  • Constantine A. Papas

    The Poet L,

Thanks. The text below the picture is deceiving, and past tense is used. “The pair will reprising roles (Met) they introduced at the ROH.” It should have been “the roles they will be introducing..”

    • armerjacquino

Yes, it could be confusing to people who don’t know what ‘September 2016’ means.

    • “The pair will reprising roles (Met) they will have introduced at the ROH.”
