Sad news: American soprano Camellia Johnson died yesterday after a brief illness.

How sad. I saw her at the beginning of her career. She sang Mamma Lucia in Caveleria with Opera Pacific (Orange County, CA). She understudied the Santuzza and had one performance in that role. A good friend of mine was in the opera chorus and alerted me not to miss this one. She blew the roof off the place. A few year later (later 1990s), I was in Southeast Florida and joined the Florida Philharmonic Chours. My first concert was the Verdi Requiem (one of the few masterworks I had not yet done) and the soprano was….Ms. Johnson! All the promise of the earlier performance was not on full display. She sailed through the Verdi with huge torrents of sound. Hi & lo, loud & soft -- she had it all. A couple of years later, she returned to do Beethoven’s 9th. A few years later, I left the Chours and then the Florida Phil went under completely. Oh well, it was great while it lasted.

“Ye Bare and Ye Cubb remains the earliest known performance of a play in the British North American colonies ”

…which is rather different from ‘North America ‘ , in the post-Colonial Williamsburg view of history. Spanish theatre flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries. In New Spain, founded in 1535, secular and religious dramas were performed before 1665.

  • I can only take Handel in small doses, so that clip of Ann Murray was perfect. She did a great job, too — I was out of breath halfway through just from listening to her.

For a 15 year old in the house, it was one of the most thrilling things I’d ever heard. Still is.

But this one really only for Francophones who will appreciate the Rococo style. Google Translate might explode.

      • Lovely! I wish I could write like you, Manou…
