“New York, this is your last chance!”

Coming this fall on a basic cable channel near you, Ultimate Diva Jessye Norman tries her hand at situation comedy, playing a 30-something bachelor girl who returns to Manhattan in search of adventure and romance. Julie Kavner is cast as her wacky younger sister.

  • This old idea from a back issue of Parterre is still the best idea of a Jessye TV show:

“Hello, I’m Jessye Norman. Won’t you join me for my new show, Bavardage? It’s fun, it’s fresh; it has a certain je ne sais quoi. Today my guests are Camille Paglia and fashion maven Mr. Blackwell. And Leon Botstein will drop by to whip up a sinful chocolate soufflé!”

Can we bring David Groh back from the dead to play her husband? He was one of my first crushes.

I have never seen Jessye’s tear gutter so pronounced as on this intriguing skinny-face photo.
