Haveman as Elisabetta in Don Carlo, which she will also sing in Hamburg next season, in French.

      • Bill

Dresden is for the most part harking back to the
old days -- that is mostly ensemble singers with
a few important guests, but the repertory is shrinking (only about 29 operas) with perhaps
only two Richard Strauss Operas, 3 Wagner, 2 Mozart
and lots of Bohemes and Traviatas. Interesting that they are doing “The Great Gatsby” Other than Thielemann and Schneider and Young most of the
conductors are not familiar names. But perhaps the greatest interest the Arabella, Elektra, the Walkuere, and of course the Lohengrin casts and
the chance to see Wildschuetz, Freischuetz, Mathis der Maler.

March 3, 1890….Female TENOR Ruby Helder..this is the REVERSE of Parterre members who sing (??) Anna Bolena finale.

  • Feldmarschallin

There is a rumor and I am not saying this is true but just want to know if anyone else has heard this that Netrebko is three months pregnant? I read this on a German site and perhaps it is not true but apparently it comes from Wien.

    • DellaCasaFan

In one of her interviews she stated that she didn’t want to have more children, but that was from the pre-Yusif period.

      • Feldmarschallin

Maybe it is all not true and like I said it is not something bad I wrote to be pregnant if it is true. I was just looking forward to hearing her Tatjana in July and fear that might be cancelled but at least for a good reason if it is true. She is in her early 40’s so it might be the right time but not for much longer. Anyway if it is true we will hear some confirmation at some point and not then we will get her Tatjana (hopefully). I think she is best in Russian roles.

        • DellaCasaFan

          Feld,
Nothing bad at all from you mentioning it. I actually thought she looked pregnant on her engagement photos from Vienna last summer and was similarly fearing not to hear her Lady M. in NY in the fall. It turned out I was wrong, but she does look very happy with Yusif, so we’ll await for the confirmation if it is true this time.

          • Jamie01

I was also wondering about this, and decided that a pregnant Lady M would be an interesting conceit. Too bad the libretto doesn’t include the part about “Come to my woman’s breasts, And take my milk for gall, you murd’ring ministers.”

        • DellaCasaFan

I agree about her being best in the Russian roles, btw.

DIVO WATCH (or possibly sanity calling): Plácido Domingo has retired the role of Di Luna and has cancelled upcoming performances in Berlin, Milano, and Salzburg. In Salzburg, he will be replaced by Artur Rucinski, the guy who replaced him last summer when he dropped out halfway through the run.

    • DellaCasaFan

Wow. I wonder if it is illness (hope not) or the first steps toward retirement (hope yes). I am not his or anyone’s basher, but this entire baritone business was a mistake, IMO.

      • armerjacquino

If he’s retired the role itself, I doubt we’re talking illness.

    • Quanto Painy Fakor

Not illness. His Macbeths in Berlin were a triumph for him. Now on to Ernani in NY as Carlo.

One of the very special places we used to visit and “hang out” for a long time was “Music Masters” in NYC. The owner, dear Willi Lerner, was a special guy, and we really adored him.

My dear late buddy,Bob Fazio, was adept at telling stories, and it is hard to write adequately to describe one of them, but I will try:

One day,Willi received a call from one of Herbert Von Karajan’s staff that he was coming on a Saturday to buy some recordings. What is really funny (and I cannot quite imitate Bob’s version) is that the voice on the phone said something like this:

“The MASTER is coming to your store. You will (VILL?) close the store to all others. You will not talk to THE MASTER. The MASTER will pick out records and then we will pay for them. You will NOT talk to THE MASTER during this visit.”

As the MASTER was leaving,I would have LOVED to have Willi (a good Jew), suddenly say, “SIEG HEIL!!” So what if he lost the money!!!!!

You see, we had so many stories to tell, but only Bob could properly describe “THE MASTER.”

Sincerely, Karl Von Karry-on, Die Master-Schlemil.

Alfredo Salmaggi, Mar.4,1886 ,was Impresario/Conductor of the Opera Co.we used to attend at Brooklyn Academy. Some singers were good, others were rather mediocre to poor.
    Funny things we saw there:

    1. Curtain accidently fell BEFORE very end of Barbiere…”Amor e fede eterna….”
    2. Anvil in Trovatore fell on guy’s foot…My ma never stopped laughing.

    3. Conductor Enrico Leide accidentally ripped pages out of his score with his baton..(well,maybe the opera was too long).

Tenor Giovanni Consiglio had a great voice when he was ON…But too variable. Rina Telli was the leading soprano…A bit worse than Nelli.

A friend of mine,Janice Matisse, a fine mezzo, sang Carmen..We became friends and had lots of fun.

Look,it can’t all be like the Met….or La Puma..or Bayreuth..but it was FUN!!!!

By the way. He never pitched for the Brooklyn Dodgers.Get it??????

CHANGE OF OPERA (again) at Wiener Staatsoper:

“L’italiana in Algeri” as live-streaming replacement of
    “La Juive”

Due to illnesses and line-up alterations in the performance series of “La Juive,” the management of the Wiener Staatsoper decided to cancel the live-streaming of March 7th, after prior consultation with the involved artists. In lieu thereof a performance of Gioachino Rossini’s “L’italiana in Algeri,” taking place on April 30th, has been added to the programme of WIENER STAATSOPER live at home. In Jean-Pierre Ponnelles’ production the Russian star bass Ildar Abdrazakov is Mustafà, Javier Camarena is Lindoro and Anna Bonitatibus Isabella. The conductor will be Jesús López-Cobos.

Customers who have already bought tickets for the live-streaming of “La Juive” can choose between a voucher for a different live broadcast or a money refund.

    ————————————-

Shicoff cancelled the first “La Juive” and the opera was changed at the last minute to “L’elisir d’amore” (!). Then he cancelled the second, but they found a cover. Shicoff showed up for the third, but the Eudoxie was out (and I think she was already replacing a replacement). And now they are scrapping the fourth performance. Yikes!

    • Feldmarschallin

That place is going downhill very fast.

      • Satisfied

        …and people give Gelb shit.

    • Bill

I gather that the Wiener Staatsoper is not scrapping
the 4th performance of La Juive but rather just not
live streaming it -- that could have been at the
request of Shicoff who missed the first
2 performances due to illness but sang the third (with good Kritics) and is scheduled to sing the 4th.
All the other singers received good reviews as well save perhaps the Leopold -- an extremely difficult part in which to excel as it lies very high.

Feldmarschallin the BSO as well as the Met has had a plethora of cast changes this winter and the prolongued illnesses of major singers such as Keenlyside and Vargas and the frequent cancellations of Harteros or Kuehmeier etc. does not help the situation much either.
      either.

      • Feldmarschallin

I keep hearing of the frequent cancellations of Harteros but do not forget that the only thing she cancelled this season was the Carlos in Wien and that was due to the Aida in Rome. And she cancelled that in the summer already. She sang all 4 Trovatores in the middle of winter here and the two Toscas in Berlin in Jan plus all 5 performances in Dresden. Her calender now is one where she is happy with in regards to travelling distances etc. The Met of course is out of the question for the known reasons. But Bill she will be doing a concert in Salzburg next summer 2016. The Othello at Easter next year will not able to be accomodated since it is at the same time her Maskenball is here. Nothing in Dresden next season but expect her there in the future with Thielemann.

        • Satisfied

Isn’t she doing Arabella next season?

          • Satisfied

In Dresden I mean to say.

            • Feldmarschallin

She just did Arabella there and the next one is the Festspielpremiere here in July. Anne Schwanewilms will be singing it in Dresden, another excellent Strauss singer whom I will hear in 4 weeks in Wien in the new Elektra with Stemme.

Mar.6, 1923…The great man who sadly left us so soon. I saw him countless times and he was a veritable DYNAMO on stage. Just the first lines of “I believe” are filled with such beauty and emotion.
    I miss him so much!!!!!

What would life be without coloratura fan????

When we were young, normal, and STARVED for opera in the summer, we used to invent all kinds of opera games. Most of them were PG-13, including a great one by dear Joan Abel, who thought Fischer-Dieskau was the Messiah.
Joanie took a Monopoly board, drew cartoon slips of paper over the places, and changed them to OPERAS….So if you landed on “Norma” you would win it if you had a cast (approved by all) in your “bank” which was a series of pieces of paper, each with a singer’s name on it, selected from a pile.
“Go” was “Va,fuggi.” “Jail” was BED…I got Kurt Baum once or twice.(In other words the “Community Chest cards said things like, “Take a singer picked at random to bed,” or “Zinka falls on you…go back three spaces!!”

Once I landed on Siegfried, but they voted me down, because I did not have slips of paper with the proper cast. I asked, “Well, why can’t I have Peters and Valletti?”It could be a “lyric Siegfried.”

Each singer’s slips had a numerical value, because at the end of the game, the person who had the most correct casts and owned the opera they landed on, would be the winner. (after Lord knows how long),so we had to agree on who gets what..Flagstad always got the highest no. We had our “fights” if we thought so-and-so would get…points…and others would say, “No..He/she sucks.”
This was known as MONOPERALY and we had great fun……I wish we could have had it patented….but who in this world would know how to cast Rienzi and/or who Osie Hawkins was.
These were great times….maybe we could do a modern one today…I can see those Community Chest cards that might say things like,” Go to bed with any tenor in your pile of singers, unless he sings Otello and should sing Nemorino,” or ” Gelb hires you, even if you can’t sing (like a few we all know)…Go ahead 10 spaces.”
Do you see how nice it was to be nuts??????? Thanks,Joanie, wherever you are. Charlie

Ain’t life funny? Years ago I used the awful Naxos Tosca w.Nelly as a frisbie…….Maybe she was ill…because I find her one of the most versatile and exciting singers in captivity…and she has been singing over 40 years..This is last year.
She is also the darling of Facebook….Well, she IS Romanian…….

    • semira mide

I totally agree about Nelly , Zinka.
Coloraturafan posted this clip with Nelly, which I think is the best all-around Armidas of modern times ( I don’t think the tenors for Callas were anything to write home about if I recall) Exciting? I think so, and after either this aria or at the end ( I don’t remember which) you can see her heave a sigh of relief. Clearly she wasn’t holding back.

  • semira mide

Nothing like a re-post to make it work. Oops.
