Gay cowboys rejoice!

During the Munich Opera Festival performances of Giacomo Puccini’s Manon Lescaut (28th and 31st of July 2015) Kristine Opolais will replace Anna Netrebko in the title role. Anna Netrebko will give her Munich role debut as Tatyana in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin during the Munich Opera Festival 2015 and will take over the part from the originally scheduled Kristine Opolais. Dates: 26th and 29th of July.

General Manger Nikolaus Bachler on this unusual change of roles: “After Mrs. Netrebko’s withdrawaI from the premiere performances of Manon Lescaut, I am delighted to have her back on the season’s roster of artists, especially in Krzysztof Warlikowski’s daring and exciting take on Eugene Onegin.

  • arepo

So does that mean Opolais was considered chopped liver?

CORRECTION OF TODAY SIDEBAR OF PERFORMANCES. The double bill of operas being performed by the Chelsea Opera were composed by Henry MOLLICONE, not Morricone.

  • Satisfied

Well, clearly Anna isn’t afraid of daring productions. Which makes her unwillingness to appear in the Neuenfels’ ML all the more surprising.

    • operaassport

Probably because “daring” was not the problem.

  • Stefan

OMG, she is going to be in that Onegin production? I saw it a few years ago when I was in Munich and it went to the top of the list of productions I most dislike. Doing the “twist” to some of this music just doesn’t work and that wasn’t the worst of it. Even I was tempted to boo and I have never done that. BUT, I’ll admit some of those shirtless cowboys parading around the stage while we came in after the intermission were damn sexy! :)

    • Feldmarschallin

Well I think the production is brilliant but what will Netrebko’s BFF Putin have to say of Anna singing in a production with gay cowboys. I hope she has seen it not that we will be in for more surprises. Great role for her and very much looking forward to hearing her in this.

      • Stefan

I’m a big supporter of innovative productions with a different perspective -- something other than the same old, same old. At least for me, this one just didn’t work. It was one of these rare times where I couldn’t even ignore it enough to just sit back enjoy the singing.

      • Ouf

I think it’s pretty good, too, in the context of Munich’s many weak productions.

It is unfortunate that the mediocre Leo Hussain is conducting, when GMD Kirill Petrenko did well with Evgeny Onegin in January.

His summer Bayreuth commitments are a pain, just when the company needs to show itself off.

        • Flora del Rio Grande

“Mediocre” Leo Hussain, Ouf? Not when I heard him conduct
La traviata at Santa Fe. He galvanized the show — one of the most
creative and refreshing treatments of that score I have ever heard.
What have you heard him conduct? Where? He is very egoccentric,
I’ll grant you that, but, then, he is a conductor! So . . . (:))

      • They could put in Tamara Iveri :) -- she’s looking for work.

  • pasavant

What does this announcement have to do with gay cowboys?

    • armerjacquino

Have a look at the production shot.

    • Lohengrin

They are part of the production Eugen Onegin in München.

  • decotodd

Indeed Feldmarschallin — Putin will say that she is propagandizing to minors that it is ok to dance with gay cowboys. Won’t someone think of the children?!

    • Guestoria Unpopularenka

Those rules don’t apply to Putin’s protegees.

      • whatever

they didn’t apply to Hitler’s Brown Shirts, either — until they did.

    Frage: Kann man Eintritttskarten zurückgeben?

Yikes, he’s got one of those Placido Domingo beards!!!

      • Feldmarschallin

Yes there are much better pictures of him than that one. Well he was sick for 6 weeks. Hopefully we will be spared Netrebkos other half.

        • Ouf

Do we know that “Netrebkos other half” is so bad? After all, he has worked in Italy a good deal more than JK, and Muti hired him. Lassen Sie uns offen zu sein.

  • Ilka Saro

Anna Yurievna has been made up to look like Meryl Streep. Why? Why? WHY? Is there no end to these wars against the Tebaldiani?

On a happier note, Lensky has a very cute butt, and this makes the curious regie staging of his death a deeper sort of resonance.

  • Jenufa

Well, here is a review of the recent Verdi Requiem in Milan where Yusif Eyvazov sang the tenor part!

    Doesn’nt sound very good…

    • Ouf

I’ve never read a review of the Verdi Requiem that ends with a discussion of the tenor and dissects the man’s technique, and “poco felice” is no description of Muti’s recent Manon Lescaut, as Parterre readers have noted. Also, “la sua relationship con Anna Netrebko” is irrelevant.

      Means a hatchet job.

      • Milady DeWinter

A hatchet probably would contribute to “il registro acuto si avvicina quasi ad un falsetto”--

Vogt will sing tomorrow in Berlin instead of Kaufmann in the 9 Beethoven Symphony.

    • Lohengrin

      Not tomorrow but on Sunday.
Good decision, rehearsals for ML need all time and power.

  • Constantine A. Papas

Does anybody know if Opolais’s getting paid Netrebko’s fee? Neb’s fee, some say, is between 20,000 to 30,000 Euros.($26K to $39K)

  • Ouf

Opolais gets EUR 8,200 a night, up from the soloist base of EUR 5,600 a night for her breakthrough Rusalkas four years ago.

    • Ouf

      Disclaimer: numbers made up.

Only the artist, her manager, Bachler, and the main “contract” person at the Staatsoper could answer Constantine’s question. Ditto on the speculated ceiling of 20k or 30k.

  • Ouf

Jonas Kaufmann has cancelled out of tomorrow’s Berlin Wall concert with Barenboim. KFV sings.
