Cher Public

An “Affair” to remember

Janácek mavens, Bayerische Staatsoper devotees and Pavel Cernoch groupies alike will be glued to their monitors this afternoon when Vec Makropulos is webcast live from Munich starting at 1:00 PM. Of course La Casa della Cieca will be open for the Full Marty.

  • Gualtier M

Nadja Michael alert. Also Tara Erraught in an ugly costume alert. Perfect Parterre storm…

  • Clivia

Has Nadja had some work done on her lips?

  • Krunoslav

Not a patch on Marie Collier!

    • armerjacquino

Collier’s Marty is available on Opera Depot. Have you heard it? It’s damn good.

    • manou

Not a patch on Marie Collier!

And to think you were chiding Dr Pappas for his idée fixe.

      • armerjacquino

It’s not so much an idee fixe with kruno as a magnificent obsession. He’s an operatic Ahab adrift in a sea of Dicks.

        • manou

          Call me Ishmaël.

  • Quanto Painy Fakor

All that touchy feely will make for interesting video.

  • Feldmarschallin

The Premiereneinführungsmatinee of Manon Lescaut at BSO has been cancelled (the first time ever). The official reason is that they need more time to rehearse and apparently Kaufmann has yet to show up. According to his facebook site he first had laryngitis and then a Grippe. Premiere is on the 15th.

    • Ouf

Oh là là. So the Beethoven 9 in Berlin had better be out too.

      • Feldmarschallin

Well funny that you mention that Beethoven 9th since a certain soprano was repeatedly asked to sing in that performance and she said that she had an opera the next evening in another city and didn’t want to sing two consecutive evenings so that she could be well rested before her performance on the 10th. The conductor finally accepted her decision. He should perhaps learn from her in that sometimes singing less will be beneficial for the long run.

        • Ouf

So he had to settle for Renée Fleming. Good! Jonas should back out as well; he has the Bambi commitment, also in Berlin, on Nov. 13. And I would be happy if neither one of them works again with the arrogant Barenboim.

    • Lohengrin

      Very strange, what happened?

    • FragendeFrau82

FM, for those outside Munich who don’t know: The Premiereneinführungsmatinee is a discussion about a new production held on Sunday morning, similar to the Insight evenings at the ROH. All participants are not usually announced in advance, and prinicipals may or may not show up.

It sounds as though they need every hour of rehearsal time…and Neuenfels has problems of his own, I think? I’ve heard that JK has been seen in town, and has at least attended rehearsals even if he’s not singing. (It’s not as if he doesn’t know the music). However I’ve also heard that AN’s BF has been rehearsing as cover…

      • Rackon

FF, Neunfels has “problems”? Is he ill also? Or the production has problems?

        • FragendeFrau82

I have heard he is an alcoholic. May or may not be true of course.

        • Ouf

His “Medea in Corinto” was ridiculous and ineffective and soon given away for recycling.

    • A. Poggia Turra

Neuenfels has a history of extending rehearsals close to the scheduled premier; in 2002, the premier of his new production of Don Giovanni in Stuttgart was moved back by eight days to allow for more rehearsal time (thankfully my schedule was flexible enough to accommodate the change).

      • Lohengrin

There is no chance to move the premiere in München I guess.
        Hard times!

        • Feldmarschallin

Well I suppose one could move the Premiere to the 19th which would be the second performance and then just add another one at the end. I have 5 performances including the first and last so I am assuming I will get him at some point. When I go there for the second Soldaten on Tuesday I will ask for a Probenplan to see what is going on and who is singing at the moment. Now I do know that Kaufmann is one of three singers who can have shortened lenghts of rehearsals but that is mainly for repetory performances. But knowing his status at the house he will sing even if he only rehearses for a week. Neuenfels will of course not be happy but Bachler will prevail. An interesting article in Opera Oct by Claudia Küster who is the rehearsal planner at the BSO. She writes:

‘The rehearsal periods are obviously different depending on whether its a new production or a revival, and on what sort of work it is -- La Boheme or La Traviata tend not to require special rehearsals for the extras or chorus. There’s a maximum of a week’s rehearsals for revivals, which is often cut down to four or even three days and which has to be devoted to getting new soloists fully up to speed with the production. During the summer festival, this can sometimes be reduced to just two or even one and a half days’.
Imagine it can happen. So it is no wonder that certain singers might prefer to sing at the BSO for a lets say repetory Boheme than at other houses which may require two full weeks of rehearsals.

          • Ouf

Kaufmann will surely give at least one of the seven to Eyvazov as a courtesy to him (for filling in at rehearsal), to Anna and to himself! The question is, which one(s)? I’m guessing Nov. 27, as a mid-point break.

            • Anna Tema

Well, now apparently Anna is out of the production, replaced by Opolais: https://twitter.com/bay_staatsoper/status/529255344464486400

            • Ouf

              FUCK!

            • Ouf

            • Ouf

Neuenfels over Netrebko — dumb decision, and a disservice to Puccini.

            • Yes, that makes perfect sense, Ouf: the company should cancel an entire production for which sets and costumes are already constructed and technical rehearsals completed, and then, with a full two weeks before the opening night, should just create a whole other production out of whatever bits and pieces happen to be lying around the storage room.

It’s unfortunate Netrebko is not singing this production, but if she is uncomfortable with what a director is doing, she is the one who should resign, not everyone else.

Of course, you’ve already seen this production (in the future) which is how you now Neuenfels has done a disservice to Puccini, right?

            • Ouf

“just create a whole other production out of whatever bits and pieces happen to be lying around”

              Yes.

Anna is usually game for Regie shit. Must be an acute case!

              Neuenfels already ruined Mayr.

Jonas may well back out too. He is less tolerant.

              It’ll be Opolais/Eyvazov, thx to Bachler’s priorities.

Yes, why NOT fire the director?

            • Feldmarschallin

What a stupid bitch. It isn’t like Neuenfels is some new talent where one didn’t know what she was getting herself into. She could have watched the Bayreuth Lohengrin and done her homework before signing the contract and letting her public stand in line to buy tickets. Very unprofessional of her and I had a feeling Opolais would jump in. Well let’s see how she does. Her Vittelia was the last thing she sang and it was horrible.

  • Feldmarschallin

Nothing happened but Barenboim didn’t seem to understand that she wants to have the 9th off so she can be well rested on the 10th. At first he was a bit taken back but now everything is fine and he understands or at least respects her decision.

    • Lohengrin

What happened to Matinee in München, was the meaning of my question.

    • Guestoria Unpopularenka

Is this the first time Barenboim has dealt with singers or is this a sign of dementia?

      • Ouf

Anyone seeing the Dresden Arabella? Harteros role debut perhaps.

        • Feldmarschallin

Role debut was in München and she has sung the role in Hamburg as well.
