Monster ball

I have banged on and on about doing an “Abscheulicher” quiz for years, and the World Cup Final was so dull I thought I’d multitask. Apologies for a couple of scary gear changes in the pitch—it’s a mixture of live, vintage and studio recordings.

[La Cieca’s note: Our lovely armerjaquino has created a quiz including 17 singers. Your challenge is to identify them correctly and in order in the comments section. The first to correctly identify all 17 is the winner and will be awarded a prize to be decided once La Cieca takes a hard look at the balance sheet at the end of July. As such, the competition will be declared officially closed at midnight on Friday, August 1.]

    3. marilyn horne. that voice is so distinctive.

  • Buster

    First hearing:
    1)
    2) KIrsten Flagstad
    3)
    4)
    5) Gundula Janowitz
    6) Inga Nielsen
    7)
    8 )
    9) Galina
    10) Christa Ludwig
    11) Hilde Konetzni
    12) Lotte Margiono
    13) Lotte Lehmann
    14)
    15) NIna Stemme
    16) Martha Moedl
    17

    • DellaCasaFan

Buster, these are fantastic hits for the first run.

It took me more than one listening for a couple of corrections:

      13) Frida Leider
      16) Leonie Rysanek
      17) Nina Stemme (complete studio w/ Abbado)

I finally found Rysanek -not on a complete Fidelio- but on one of her Preiser recitals, Rudolf Michi (?) is listed as the conductor, 1950. That one was tricky, Armer.

  • Hippolyte

#3 is Marilyn Horne, and I think I hear Rysanek toward the end, possibly #16?

    • CwbyLA

I thought #3 was Horne, too but then i though to myself that it was not possible. I had no idea she sang this aria.

      • Cocky Kurwenal

She recorded it on some sort of C19th diva tribute album, making some strenuous point about how attitudes to Fach have changed or something. I want to say it was Malibran-inspired, just like Bartoli, but I might be wrong.

I don’t know if she ever did the whole role, but she did do Marzelline in some performances in San Francisco in the 1960s.

  • Feldmarschallin

Rysanek was there as well as Frida Leider who was also towards the end.

  • DellaCasaFan

    7) Sena Jurinac

I think Rysanek was earlier, 3) “Doch toben auch…”

    • 98rsd

      I thought 3 was Moedl…

      • DellaCasaFan

Jurinac is definitely #7, but I got Rysanek wrong for #3. I don’t think there is a complete Fidelio with Horne, but just found her “Abscheulicher” on Youtube. Hippolyte was right, Horne is #3.

Everyone who is still coherent (that does not include me) please enter this quiz -- armerjacquino is a favorite of mine.

    • armerjacquino

Well, that’s kind of you, phoenix. Thank you.

  • The_Kid

    Hmmm…lemme try:

    1. Gertrude Grob-Prandl
    2. Kirsten Flagstad
    3. Marilyn Horne
    4. Hildegard Behrens
    5. Elizabeth Schwarzkopf
    6. Diana Jacklin
    7. Sena Jurinac
    8. Leonie Rysanek
    9. Waltraud Meier
    10. Christa Ludwig
    11. Inge Borkh
    12. Gré Brouwenstijn
    13. Lotte Lehmann
    14. Shirley Verrett
    15. Nina Stemme
    16. Rose Bampton
    17. Gladys Kutcha

    • Camille

Who IS Diana Jacklin…a favourite of The Vicar?

It seems I’ve heard the name somewhere.

Leonie comes very late in the lineup here. Will listen another eighty times and come back……

  • La Valkyrietta

I never find any game in the World Cup dull as I never watch any :), but I did love the Gaucho song. Very happy Germany won.

  • peter

No. 1 is Rita Hunter and no. 8 is Eileen Farrell.

  • Which one is Anna Moffo? What? No Anna Moffo?

    • Camille

Oh silly! She’s singing Marzelline on this one!

Are you singing with Dell’Arte again this summer, o Sanfordissimo? Do you get to be one of the “sicarj” in Macbetto??

      • Dell’arte and I have severed our relationship. But I’m singing chorus for Ballo with Regina Opera in November.

        • Camille

          Severed? Like Anne Boleyn’s head?

Hoping it was not a painful one and just a natural kind of demise of relations. Sorry if I brought up any unpleasant association.

Timely quiz- Fidelio on Medici tomorrow from Verbier, conducted by Minkowski, and of course later in the year at La Scala. Will be going to Santa Fe’s rendition one more time during which I plan to close my eyes and listen as the production is niche sehr gut.

      NICHT

    • phoenix

You mean the one with Irma Bombeck as Leonore? The audio stream is being broadcast on Espace2 Suisse today. Is it too late to sandwich her Abscheulicher into the quiz somewhere?

  • tornado12

    I think, I’ve got it:
    1) Rita Hunter
    2) Kirsten Flagstad
    3) Marilyn Horne
    4) Hildegard Behrens
    5) Gundula Janowitz
    6) Inga Nielsen
    7) Sena Jurinac
    8) Eileen Farrell
    9) Galina Vishnevskaya
    10) Christa Ludwig
    11) Gladys Kuchta
    12) Lotte Margiono
    13) Frida Leider
    14) Jeannine Altmeyer
    15) Gre Brouwenstijn
    16) Leonie Rysanek
    17) Nina Stemme

    • tornado12

Although I’m not sure about the Kuchta. The pitch on the recording I found on YouTube was a bit different, but she was in the exact places (and in the exact way) not together with the orchestra like on that recording. Can’t wait to find out, which the right recordings are.

  • DellaCasaFan

Not entirely sure about one of the listed, but I think this would be the order:

    1) Rita Hunter
    2) Kirsten Flagstad
    3) Marilyn Horne
    4) Hildegard Behrens
    5) Gundula Janowitz
    6) Erika Sunnegardh (NOT her Met broadcast)
    7) Sena Jurinac
    8) Eileen Farrell
    9) Galina Vishnevskaya
    10) Christa Ludwig
    11) Gladys Kuchta
    12) Lotte Margiono
    13) Frida Leider
    14) Jeannine Altmeyer
    15) Gré Brouwenstijn
    16) Leonie Rysanek
    17) Nina Stemme

    • DellaCasaFan

That smiley for Eileen Farrell is tornado12’s. Mine would be for Janowitz :-)

      • tornado12

Oh no, you’re so right about Sunnegardh… I was so certain, I didn’t check. I’d like to change my offer.
