Miles to go

“When is good enough not quite good enough? For the answer, look no further than New York City Opera’s production of Benjamin Britten’s The Turn of the Screw. Opening at BAM on Sunday, just after the edgy brilliance of the company’s Powder Her Face last week, the uninspired competence of Screw is a huge letdown.” [New York Post]

Excellent review. Exactly right. Following on the heels of “Powder Her Face,” the set for the Britten was shockingly cheap — not spare in a clever, effective or stylish way, but just plain cheap. I wasn’t even sure there was a stage director. The Governess and Mrs. Grose, in particular, appeared to be left to their own devices, which consisted almost exclusively of planting themselves downstage and facing the audience straight on. Luckily Benjamin Wenzelberg, the boy, was truly impressive.

When I saw “Powder Her Face” on Saturday night I was excited to think that NYCO had found its footing in a niche that badly needs to be filled. The Britten matinee on Sunday was deflating.

After reading this review my eye was caught by the headline on the link at the bottom of the page: ‘BANANA BIG REFUSED TO CALL 911 FOR DYING THREE-WAY SEX PARTNER, COP SAYS’.

Now THAT sounds like an opera. Imagine the big trio ‘No, chiamar non voglio’!

    • Belfagor says:

Would that be ‘Two Turns of the Screw’ or ‘A Turn of Two Screws’? I’m confused.

      More concise header: CHIQUITA--PEELED--OCCASIONS SLIP!

      “A hard-partying banana mogul”

      Is there any other kind?

Maybe for the Met’s April run, Monterone can be restyled as a Hard-Partying Banana Mogul.
