I’ve been working on the regie road

Remember, remember, the first of November, the Occupy regie and quiz! In fact, it required only a few hours of that fateful day for spiderman to identify the opera in question. It was indeed Verdi’s Macbeth, in a staging by Ivo van Hove for the Opéra de Lyon. Another puzzler, this one “period” in style, follows the jump.

La Fanciulla del West because I have seen productions where Minnie arrives in act three on a hand-pump rail car rather than a horse. Failing that, Il Trovatore.

    EASY CALL!

    It’s obviously Ernani.

    1. Act II: Ernani (disguised as a pilgrim) interrupts Silva and Elvira on their wedding day.

    2. Act I: Silva is enraged to find two men (Ernani and Don Carlo) in his fiancee’s boudoir, although two of them is actually kind of safe — threesomes somehow never occur in Verdi. Regie stagings of Verdi … perhaps.

    3. Act III: Don Carlo, having been elected Holy Roman Emperor, orders all the conspirators shot before the “Charlemagne Election Special” zips him off to his coronation.

Or could it be The Rake’s Progress after all?
    No; not this time.
