Camille,
Your wish has been answered:
“The Gilbert fest includes a 12-tone one-act opera, Luigi Dallapiccola’s “Il Prigioniero” (“The Prisoner”), with Gerald Finley, the bass-baritone, in the title role

Still no “solution” to January 31st regieteatre probe?
Michael Grandage was once on ‘Rumpole of the Bailey’ playing barrister Dave Inchcape (in one episode, ‘Rumpole and the Quality of Life.’) So there’s a review of the second cast (Gerald Finley, Kyle Ketelsen) in his Don Giovanni. As ever, on Superconductor.
There’s something almost heroic about the shamelessness with which you plug your blog…
maybe rufus could write an opera about an heroic yet shameless operablogger???
For those who can’t wait for tomorrow, here are the director videos for:
- The Tempest http://bcove.me/0pume8xc
- Parsifal http://bcove.me/sn2jy1n5
- Maria Stuarda http://bcove.me/no6ryxw2
- Giulio Cesare http://bcove.me/arw496yl
Oups messed up the link for Parsifal, here it is: http://bcove.me/zmdikw79
Thank you! I love it, although I remember how enthusiastic I was when I saw the first article/video about the new Ring cycle. I like what the director had to say, although he is surely not ‘regie’ enough for everyone here, it sounded good to me.
(grrr why doesn’t my video downloader work on this?)
Thank you again, Iphigénie!
And here are:
- Ballo in Maschera http://bcove.me/4m2e8916
- Rigoletto http://bcove.me/v4siyo2w
- Elisir d’Amore http://bcove.me/gw4n4ovn
Iphigenie you are un ange! So happy to have this info!
thanks for the videos…the Parsifal and Ballo seem like the most interesting for me from the production. I cannot really imagine Mattila as Amelia though. But I like Alden.
Rigoletto looks fun too…just saw that. What will the NY audiences think of this I wonder.
It had never occurred to me that Las Vegas was “timeless and universal.”
Can never tell how producers will reinterpret opera anymore. I’d swear that Parsifal production looks and sounds just as if it were Aida.
Born on this day in 1685 composer George Frideric Handel
Born on this day in 1927 soprano Regine Crespin. Love the way she sings this:
For those who were wondering about who would make “A Sweet Mistake” as Heidi Schiller in the L.A. transfer of “Follies” – well Carol Neblett is the lucky diva. I am somewhat glad since Neblett gave a rather heartbreaking interview some years ago in Opera News where she covered the death of her mother and daughter and the dissolution of her marriage. Neblett’s claims that she still can sing well were backed up by some commenters on this site who have heard her recently.

I’ve recently enjoyed listening to recordings of Zemlinky’s works — the symphonies and chamber works are great. Of the operas, I know that LA staged Der Zwerg a few years ago and I’ve seen references to productions of Eine Florentinische Tradogie in Europe. These works sound amazing — do they work on stage? I know that Zemlinsky’s reputation is in “recovery” (a la Conlon) but from a purely auditory point of view, these operas are beautiful — what keeps them from being staged more often?
The COC is presenting Eine Florentinische Tradogie in a double-bill with Gianni Schicci this spring — two 20th century operas set in Florence. I’m looking forward to it.
Will it be the same production as in Lyon? The Lyon Opera has just presented Eine Florentinische Tradogie and Gianni Schicci as a double-bill; it was part of a very interesting ‘Trittico Festival’.
…Tragodie…
No, it’s a new production, directed by Catherine Malfitano!
Hmm. Late May would probably be a lovely time to visit Toronto…
Are you seeing Hoffmann at COC? I’m going to be passing through Toronto for a day on my way back from Montreal and was considering catching a later flight to watch the opera…
Yes, I usually see everything at the COC at least once. I’m concerned, however, about John Relyea as the four villains. He recently withdrew from another engagement and I’m hoping it’s not for technical issues…
Born on this day in 1842 composer Arrigo Boito
Born on this day in 1846 composer Luigi Denza
Happy 80th birthday composer Michel Legrand
Happy 78th birthday soprano Renata Scotto
Since no-one’s brought it up yet, Plácido Domingo was on The Colbert Report last night. He duetted on La donna é mobile with the pseudo-conservative court jester: Coverage on Superconductor
Could the knowledgable Parterrians help me? I am desperate to see Walküre with JK. However, the Met is still selling only complete cycles. If I go ahead and make a hotel reservation (could be cancelled) and flight (can’t be cancelled) should I just come up there on the day and might there be returns? Are the standing seats sold on the day only? Any suggestions most gratefully appreciated.
