Downbeat in the dark

Which maestro, a former music director of an American opera company, is now in the running for that title at the Met—assuming the company indeed has done a radical about-face in its plans?

There’s only one person that could replace Jim Levine, in the same completeness- the musician, the conductor, the pianist, the teacher: Antonio Pappano

It’s rumoured, though, that Tony P, didn’t go down well with the orchestra when he conducted Onegin at the Met, and over here we all assumed that pulling out of “his” Royal Opera Don Carlo production when it was transferred to the Met was his way of saying he didn’t want the job. It’s a much bigger job than Covent Garden and a lot further away from his Tuscan bolt-hole – and his other job in Rome.

Actually I appreciate many sopranos and happily pay to go and hear any one them. I just wouldn’t pay to go and hear AN sing anything.

Actually there is a tenor or two I feel the same about, too! LOL

Although the Runnicles-Nagano-mebbe Domingo- names dropped are probably good guesses, after having slept on this idea another night, I had this thought:

If the Met doesn’t want or is prevented from taking Maestro Luisi, who may indeed have some sort of tentacles reaching out all the way from Zurich that prevent his accession to the throne and would make it an irrevocable FATAL ERROR for the Met, AND
the fact that Maestro Levine still has his job and is very unlikely to willingly resign–of course the Board could oust him but I think that highly unlikely–what about
    THEM
keeping Levine as the titular head, or Music Director Emeritus, as a sort of Sorcerer to a younger talented up and coming maestro’s Apprentice, instead?? Someone American and who will go along with the Company Plan? Somehow Maestro Luisi strikes me as a litle too Euro for the administrative side of things — he does come out of that system — and he make have perfectly good ideas that clash with the company style, even if he is a talented conductor and all that.

All of this may be far more convoluted than the little guessing game La Cieca, in all her wily ways, has presented to us. Just wondering aloud, that’s all.

I seriously love Luisi. I hope that this rumor turns out untrue, as I think he’s the best available option for the Met at this point. The only person mentioned who could stack up is Pappano, but that seems unlikely. Please, please, please no Runnicles/Nagano/Conlon/etc.

    • Camille says:

      Seconding your please, please, please.

It makes me shudder when I see him proudly proclaiming himself as a booklover. How is GelbWorld going to sell that in the age of Kindle?

  • Camille says:

After having read the article on Luisi in his new digs, I am wondering more than ever what gives here…? Why would he buy a place here, and especially drag along his wife and young son, unless he knew absolutely beyond certain that he had the job in the bag? Or is he just taking a giant leap in the air and hoping against hope?

I wonder how Runnicles-Conlon-Nagano got “into the running”, and/or if La Cieca got a bad or false lead?

Also, whatever is Placido Domingo to sing in the spring with OONY?
Was that ever determined? Youth wants to know.

    Luminosa La Cieca,

After listening to a guy conduct (and conduct from the harpsichord) first Don Giovanni and then Siegfried, all in the space of a few days, I am really wondering who they could get to do as well, or better…?

    Any new news?
