Paul Taylor grabs Koch

The Paul Taylor Dance Foundation has announced that the Paul Taylor Dance Company 2011-12 New York Season will be at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The three-week season will begin on March 13 and end on April 1, 2012.

    The die is cast!

(PS: In the days when Sarah Caldwell and her defunct Opera Company of Boston were also nomads, she often liked to play the Stravinsky Fanfare before performances to spur interest in their obtaining their own theater.

    Addio col rancor

Sad and sickening, each step propels a premier arts organization further further down this death spiral. Steel started it all, of course, when he gave City Ballet precious performance weeks in the fall season. That was the Faustian bargain made with Mr. Koch if I am not mistaken. NYCO got what, 9 million?

    ‘To this we’re come….”

    Popora:
ARE you saying that City Opera got paid off by the BAD Brothers?

Your facts, PLEASE.. show us, if you can… that NYCO got one red cent , in hand, from the Brothers Koch….

Are we now supposed to boycott Paul Taylor… and The NYCB, as well…?

    • Bluessweet says:

      How quickly they forget:

BP: You have been so strident in your defense of both the NYCO and the Kochs that one wonders if you are not a paid flack. On the other hand, the extreme left posting on this topic would appear to be paid anti-flacks.

The truth lies somewhere in the middle, as can be seen in these two links, one of which is Parterre Box itself and the other is actually to be found on the Parterre Box thread. I have made it available directly for those who cannot be bothered to go two steps for clarification or already remember the issue but would check my facts.

No, there is no mention of any Koch participation in the affair. Yes, there is explicit reference to renting out the Koch Theater when NYCO or NYCB were not in residence. Is this really surprising? The more rent received, the more the building management has to keep the place up and/or lower total rental charges for a group using the theater for part of the year. Remember (I know it’s hard for some) that the whole Koch involvement was cause by BUILDING needs, not that of either the Ballet or opera companies.

No, I’m not a Koch fan. I’m not a NYCO management fan either. I always feel for the little guy (for I am one) but sometimes union management can be as stupid as any other player in these little dramas. As has been point out by others on other threads, in this case, the unions have very little leverage, since you can’t get blood from a stone. The best they can do is to huff and puff as a near bankrupt company plays out its last cards.

Remember that the clip above of the divine Ms. Sills is now over thirty years old. Where did my life go? Where did NYCO’s life go? Where is LOOM? Well, we all have collective descendants, even NYCO. Let’s wish the old organization the best and, perhaps a Phoenix-like revival. If that does not happen, well, who will be the next to offer great performances, Francesca Zambello and Glimmerglass? Perhaps they can expand to a winter season in NYC, who can tell?

Anyway, the world will not come to an end, any more than it did with the fall of Constantinople.

      • Quanto Painy Fakor says:

Yes, it’s only natural that if New York’s CITY opera should go roving to delight 8 million butts in the big apple, then the New York STATE opera in Glimmerglass should spread their wings to Manhattan and eventually obscure the memories of the now defunct NYCO prior to Geroge Steel.

      • Conchita says:

Worse things could happen to the opera scene in NYC than Glimmerglass being a presence. Although, if they’re smart, they’ll avoid big venues like the Koch and keep the feeling of smaller scale intimacy they enjoy at the Alice Busch theater in Cooperstown. Maybe concert versions at the Alice Tully Hall? It’s the right size and keeps another opera opportunity in Lincoln Center.

“BP: You have been so strident in your defense of both the NYCO and the Kochs that one wonders if you are not a paid flack”

“strident” in my defense of the truth…and fair- ness, perhaps….?

I mince no words… I have ALWAYS enjoyed myself at NYCO much more then at any other opera company on the Lincoln Center Campus,…..( maybe not as much as at The Julliard…)

… if my comments sound like strident defense, then, so be it….

As for “defending” the Koch’s.. well that would be libelous, if it weren’t so funny… although my pinko blood does boil slightly at the mere suggestion that I have anything other then the utmost loathing for the wicked brothers

        • Alto says:

I don’t remember any stridency from BP. Is it “strident” to ask for support for unsupported statements?

          • brooklynpunk says:

…don’t hold your breath fer that, Alto… It evidently is more amusing to make unfounded slurs and snide accusations, then to provide meat and potato FACTS, for some “fans”…eh?

..It seems to me, though, that there is enough negative stuff that one COULD come up with, concerning the last number of years at CityOpera, then to pull crap out of thin air….

          • kashania says:

Accusing BP of supporting Kochs is pretty darned hilarious.

Thank you BP and QPF for the tip re Ellenville.
