Everything but the Regie snappin’ at her rear end

Demonstrating that delicate exotic fruits need not always be ignorant, dear Lady Bracknell guessed correctly that our most recent Regie quiz was, in fact, Salome. Thilo Reinhardt‘s production from the Komische Oper Berlin was not very well received, alas, though, on the bright side, it did provide a lively subject for the cher public’s guessing. Another puzzler follows the jump.

    Could it be Mignon?
    1. Wilhelm and Laertes get acquainted while chambermaid awaits orders.
    2. Frederick–”Me voici dans son boudoir.” Mignon, not so well concealed in the wardrobe. Wilhelm questions F.
    3. Philine and Frederick

The head is Medusa. What operas are related to Medusa?

Lully wrote a Persee. I have no knowledge of it beyond that it exists. But that it exists enables me to guess it.

  • Cara Speme says:

Well…Medusa turns people to stone so, could Fiordiligi’s Come Scoglio? Hmm…Cosi Fan Tutti maybe? There is a maid in another shot…could that be Despina?

OT: Sorry if this has been posted somewhere before, but just read reviews from Orfeo ed Euridice. NYP and NYT reviews oddly opposite, while AP agreed with NYT. It does seem Oestreich and Jordan saw completely different shows.

Looks like a nice debut for Royal, JJ notwithstanding (It is me or does JJ never really like anything?)

Re JJ, that’s not my impression–I recall raves about Don Carlo, The Nose, Traviata, Iphigenie, etc.

  • Lucy says:

The Ariadne guesses seem more plausible than what I’m going with, which is Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice

    1. Mourning chorus of nymphs, shepherds, etc. are here reimagined as the domestic servants of the happy couple fretting over the funeral expenses.

    2. Amor appears! To get to Hades Orfeo (sexy androgynous figure on right) will have to go through the (symbolic of something, surely) theater dressing table.

    3. Euridice gets fixated on the theater dressing table; I infer lots of Significant Stage Business. Orfeo here pauses to plead with her (dun dun DUN.)

The Medusa head and a man/boy sitting on a throne that is too big. I was going to guess Cosi but since it is taken I’ll say The Maid of Orleans.

  • Sir Ferris says:

    Rinaldo?

  • Hans Lick says:

    It’s obviously Elektra!

    1) Aided by Orest and Elektra, Aegisth chooses the night’s menu, Casserole a la Thyeste.

    2) Ignoring the Tutor, Elektra is thrilled when Orest reveals his true identity.

    3) With a devoted Elektra helping out, Klytaemnestra makes herself up before going to the religious services.
